My DD is getting married next Oct. She has already ordered "the dress" and it is lovely. It leaves her shoulders and arms bare and looks beautiful on her.
I was buying some yarn very reasonable on ebay and picked up a cone of very rich looking cream colored soft knubby yarn. I was going to make her a sweater, but instead got the idea of a wrap or shawl for her wedding in case it is cold that day. (she could throw it over her shoulders to go to the reception)
My question is...Is this a hokey idea? Out of date? Out of fashion?
I started knitting the yarn and it is really pretty and would be nice I think, but I don't want to make something that is "not done" by today's standards.
Feedback...PLEASE.

I wrote you a reply but it seems to have disappeared. The short version: ask your DD (daughter?) what she thinks.

That was my thought also. It really doesn't matter what I think - she is the bride it only matters what she thinks.

You see, I was going to surprize her with it. Give it to her at her shower.
Maybe I should just ask her like you said and surprize her with something else.
It is not alot of work to make. mmmmm

You could always ask her what she plans to do if it is a chilly day. Then work shawls into the conversation.

On the knitting forum I am on shawls are a big thing. You now see throws and shawls everywhere. If you make it please post a photo.

elisie, Thanks. And to you Indigo too.
DD came up this weekend and we were chatting. I wish that I would just have worked it into converstation, but I did not get on the computer in time, to see that hint.
I did show her the start of the shawl. She absolutely loved it. She said that she was going to get something, but this was prettier than anything she had seen.
I didn't know they were in style. I was just being a mom.
Well, it isn't a surprize now, but at least I know. DD likes to have everything set. And she was going to buy something for herself. So it is a good thing I told her.

Glad to know that your daughter is happy about the shawl. I knitted for myself one for my daughter's wedding which had an outside ceremony in Vancouver last March. She had a small jacket that she ordered with the dress which looked very nice, but if your daughter likes the knitted shawl that's even better. Be sure to show us a picture.

Thanks for posting. I will be sure to add a picture when the time comes.
I did finish the shawl and will give it to her at her shower I think.
The wedding is in Oct, and here in Michigan, that could mean 85' or 35'. It is an indoor wedding, but with that dress with no sleeves or straps, it could be chilly going to the reception, esp in the evening.
I know I am just being a "mom".

This is an interesting link that might interest you. I love the message that goes with the shawl when you give it to the person that you knitted it for.

By far the majority of the wedding dresses right now are sleeveless and shoulderless! And SHAWLS and other coverings are hugely in fashion. I'm so glad you showed your daughter and she loved it. Having you make the shawl for her will be so special. I'm looking forward to seeing the picture posted!

I was worried that they were not in fashion. DD is quite fashionable, living in the city. And me in the woods wearing jeans and sweatshirts every day.
In her job, she has to wear suits, and be quite up to date on everything. (She is an executive producer for a tv station).
Thank you so much for the link. That would be so wonderful to add with the shawl. Thank you, thank you.
