Hi Everyone. Happy Thanksgiving!
Question: Son brought me home some flat pieces of tempered glass salvaged from a broken food serving cart (multiple levels) The pieces are maybe 16 by 14 and not more than a 1/4 inch thick. Clear and smooth like window glass. Hardly a hint of green. He said he saw one shattered and it was not 'sparkly' like auto glass is when it shatters. It also wasn't as green. He knows that I have been on the hunt..so decided to take it home. So my question is .. are there different types of tempered glass? There is a stamp on the glass that says "tempered." I am hoping to use to make a gazing ball for the garden. Thanks. Dorothy

Dorothy, tempering is a process applied to glass to make it more break resistant and to shatter into small pieces rather than the usual sharp jagged shards of 'ordinary' glass. As to colors and hues, all I have ever seen has been clear. With all the talented folks working with tempered glass fragments on DG there is bound to be someone who will have a better answer for you.

Thank you. I am going to put on some goggle and give it a whack when all my company goes back home. I hope it will break the way I need for the gazing balls. I am hoping for that shattered sparkly look. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

A tip before breaking. If you hit it on the edge it will break easier than hitting it on the face.

missingrosie: There are a number of posts about using tempered glass on the Trash to Treasures forum, and some folks there who've got a lot of experience with it. This is just one of many that might give you some info on working with it. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/733237/
There was also a thread about using kilns in the T toT forum that had some great stuff.
