I am strongly considering adding some chickens to our little operation to help meet the very strong demand we had for fresh eggs at market. But I just read something that gave me pause.
In this month's edition of Mother Earth News, there is a Letter to the Editor from a woman who sold eggs at market. She said that her insurance company forced her to stop selling eggs. The reasoning was that if someone cam down with Salmonella, she couldn't prove it didn't come from her eggs. Eggs were the only thing she sold and she was covered under a homeowners umbrella policy. Her husband was an attorney and apparently she stopped.
What's the deal with this? Is this enough of a potential problem to be concerned about? How do any of you who sells eggs handle?
