| Howdy Folks!
Recently I heard of MS "Access" and a friend sent me some introductory lessons and "getting started" lessons. Unfortunately I don't have Access on my system (only Excel). While I was Googling for an inexpensive Access program I came across Opal Office software, VERY inexpensive, too! http://www.officebestdeal.com/?gclid=CMXazsfOhZACFQGdPAodVRv...
Even though I'm not sure if the Access lessons I rec'd will help me learn Opal Office I'm still considering ordering it. However, it seems too good to be true. Then again maybe it is as good as they say. (There are many raving reviews from customers on their webpage.)
However, can anyone hear tell me more? Is it worth trying? Will it conflict with my MS programs (Excel, Word)? Anything else I should know?
Many thanks!

| Shoe, I couldn't find any references or reviews of this Opal name anywhere except that one link. But if it is simply a place to download open office then why not go to http://www.download.com/3000-2064_4-10743770.html
There at least I would feel confident that it is not a scam and it is 100% free. |

| Go to http://www.openoffice.org and you can download a suite of programming for free that is very much similar to MS Office. I have it on one of our computers and have used it a little and it works perfectly well.

| Thanks, Zany! I'll check it out. Hoping it has something similar to "Access" as I hear it is an easy program to use for inventory, customer lists/info, and will do many way of sorting (queries?).
Thanks, Ken. I'll go read up on that.

| Oh m'goodness! Apparently the brain of Shoe must've stubbed its toe or perhaps tangled his shoelaces or something. I just found my Office 2000Pro disk and it has Access on it.
Unfortunately my computer was only loaded with Excell and Word, not Access. (Or at least it isn't listed under Start > Programs, etc.)
I'm sittin' here befuddled. I was hoping I could put the disk in and somehow drag and drop Access onto my computer but apparently that ain't the way it works, eh?
Is there some EASY way to get Access loaded or do I have to know more knowledge than I have? What I've tried is when the disk is loaded I click Explore, then PFILES, then MSOFFICE, then OFFICE. Sheesh, that brings up a load of folders and files...the only one I see that has "access" in the name is ACCESS.PIP and MSACCESS.EXE and MSACCESS.TUW.
I was able to bring up some sort of Wizard (somewhere, .exe?) but it dead-ended while looking for files or data or something.
Am I in over my head?
So Sorry, Folks!

| Hmmm,
on my installation disc I just put it in and click on it under my computer. It starts a dialog asking what I want to do. ie : install and a list of programs on the disc. I select the program I want to install or clikck to install all programs. If I select just acess then that is the only thing installed. |

| I'll try again later then. For some reason mine doesn't do that. I'm working with Win2K her and I understand it is a bit different in its commands that other OS.
Gonna clear my head a bit and come back.
Thanks, Zany!

Opal Office Scam
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I purchased a program called Opal Office and all I got was the FREE OpenOffice.org 2.3.1. The website is called OfficeBestDeal.com. Don't be fooled like me. I know OpenOffice and like using it, but I'm used to the controls of MS Office, so this site says it's exactly like MS Office. Boy was I wrong. It's the exact same thing that I already had on my computer (OpenOffice.org 2.3.1). Don't get med into buying this software for $11.95. You can download it for free from openoffice.org. Additionally, if you got med and you need to contact them for any reason...the email address to the person in charge is office@officebestdeal.com . Tell them how you got ripped off and tell them to give your back.

| Opal office is actually a scam perpetrated to get money for a free program. How they have been able to get away with this is something I am looking into currently. However, OPEN OFFICE (I was fooled so you should learn from my mistakes) is a free product available to you or anyone, and yes I love it!! You can get a free download of Open Office at:
http://download.openoffice.org/
for a free version of what I use. If you like it consider a small donation to the authors but it is not required. They also offer a new upgraded 2008 version but require you to try a subscription to technical support. The subscription can be canceled and the software is technically free. However, the link above is to the software I use and it is way more than adequate. I use it in my office and at home.
This was written as an alternative to the MS Office monopoly and it even has the ability to create simple .PDF files without signing up for the .PDF license. Try it and let us know!

| Opal Office is not exactly what I would call a scam. There are many things for free including information that are bundeled and sold on the internet all the time. That doesn't make them a scam. I know how to fix just about everything on my laptop including replacing the LCD screen and motherboard, and the information on how to do that is on the internet and it is free. So if I go and fix someones laptop and charge them, did I scam them? No, I sold them a service. Either they were to damm lazy to learn how a computer works and how to fix it, or they would rather pay someone because they want to spend their time doing something else. Opal Office is no different. Also if you were already familiar with Open Office, I don't know how you could have missed the fact on the main page of their website in very plain and easy to read font that they name all of the programs exactly the same as OpenOffice does except that they put the word Opal in front of it. For example Opal Office Impress instead of OpenOffice Impress, or Opal Office Calc in stead of OpenOfficeCalc. Also Openoffice is not completly compatible with Microsoft Office. I've used it quite a bit as well, and I can tell you that some of my Excel files don't function correctly in OpenOffice. And if you receive a Microsoft Office file that has VB Scripting in it or Macros, it won't work properly. It is fairly compatible if you perform very basic tasks, or you don't need to share your file with someone else who has Microsoft Office and doesn't want to install OpenOffice. |

| Actually buckteethbob, yes it is a scam. When you advertise that you are selling a software called Opal Office and get a software called Open Office, you are scamming people. I'm not sure how much education you have or if you've actually downloaded this program from officebestdeal.com, but they are scammers and do not buy anything from them. I, like the post above, purchased this program thinking it was just like MS Office. No, it was just openoffice and I already had that installed. Also the only thing on their site that says anything about openoffice is near the bottom in the FAQ's section stating, "No, it does not need a license key. It comes fully licensed under LGPL license, based on OpenOffice.org®, which is produced and maintained by free software community." Nowhere else does it say that it is openoffice. Everything else is labeled OO Writer, OO Calc, OO Impress, etc... Does NOT say Open Office nor does it say Opal Office. Get your facts straight before you post comments that you know nothing of. |

| So Bucktooth, what your saying is that if my computer goes down and I hire a computer repair person like yourself and paid $40/hour (in advance). Then later found out that you had done nothing to my computer except bang it a couple of times and say it's fixed. What's even more disturbing is that I also find out that your actually not a computer repair tech, but a plumber.
Now, would you call that a scam?
That's what this program is, a scam. You pay for something, and you get something else. Worst of all that was already free and you already had it installed on your pc. That is a SCAM!
I see your point, but that's not what everyone is saying about the free software. They are saying that you don't actually get a program called Opal Office, you get the program called Open Office (which most people already had). There is no research or laziness involved in this. When I first googled "opal office scam" I didn't get anything. The funny thing is that all the comments about the software were good comments, no bad at all. I got scammed by this person, don't be fooled like me. You can get it for free at openoffice.org. I'm still waiting for the refund. If anyone has tried this and got scammed like me, file a complaint with google and with bbbonline. |

| Hi everyone
Just joined in. Was searching for info on Opal office before buying it. Glad to have found this forum. Crazy thing is that its a gardening website that has something of value to say about OpalOffice and the rest of the internet seems to be happily unaware of this scam.
Well, thank you all for revealing Opaloffice as a scam. I have used MS office for a long time and OpenOffice of late. My only complaint about OpenOffice is that it is slower - may be my computer is not performing well. Once I reformat and reinstall everything then i will know for sure
(I save application files (data) and backkup software on a second disk. The operating system and other software are on the main disk. This way when things go really wrong just reformatting and re-installing the OS and other software does the trick even when the paid professional repairperson has failed -- very simple and easy because the disk that came with your machine does all that if you just do the onscreen instructions. Used to set up data disk as a slave disk but the recent usb flash drives are just plug-and-play:)
I would like to point out to Bucktooth that selling the free OpenOffice under the disguise of not-free OpalOffice for $11.95 is not comparble to offering a computer repair service learned from free resources . First one is pure scam which is cheating people of $11.95 and the later is not (if you sold the free computer-repair info then your actions will have also been a scam. Hope you are comfortable with that and i apologise if i have over-killed it.
In my experience about 97% of sold info is available free of charge on internet. You will find it if you employ different search techniques long enough (a month sometimes). In the last 8 yrs I have spent about $8000 on such info (researches in different fields) and discovered that only $200 need have been spent. The rest were found free somewhere or the other, sooner or later.
Cheers

| Good thing I saw this thread, I just sent an email question to Opal Office. Maybe you guys can answer it. I have an inspection reporting program that was designed to be used with Microsoft Office 2007. Instead of buying MS Office, I downloaded a free trial 2 month version which is about to expire. Will Open Office work with my program??? |
