- Good head for spatial design to plan pipe runs
- decent memory for building codes
- steady hands for soldering
- some knowledge of electricity for connecting water heaters and the like
- decent head for conceptual math, such as "3 2-in pipes need at least a ?in size pipe to drain without backing up"
- Tons of patience for tracking down that last slow leak

I'm sure there's more...but the actual mechanics of putting pipes together isn't that hard - it's the correct planning where the skill comes in. Most monkeys can glue 2 pieces of pvc pipe together. Knowing WHICH pieces of pipe to glue together is something else... :-)

Then there's the 'advanced' stuff like septic field calculations, grinder pump installations, and commercial plumbing (especially things like hospital plumbing which can need things like glass pipes in places and specially isolated runs for infectious disease wards, etc)...

In India I think that no one dreams of being a plumber. It does not count as a good profession in our country. In fact what they get by in return of their service in not much.
