We have had bad experience with our outdoor flood light. The 1st one lasted maybe 6 mo. Then we put another one up and we could not get the thing to work so returned it. This one had to have a new light bulb thing in it after 2 weeks. ($12) Now we are trying to set it on a dusk to dawn and it is so very undependable. Sometimes on sometimes not after dark. Is there a brand or type that is dependable? We paid $30 for this one, it is not a big one but for our narrow driveway just fine.

The Intermatic brand mechanical timers are reliable. These are very common in commercial buildings, and they're not very expensive:

Those would mount near your breaker panel and control whatever fixture that you wire into them. Then you can just use a real simple fixture. But they have all different kinds, some with light sensors, etc., indoor, outdoor, on and on.

My experience as a electrical contractor is: you get what you pay for, buy the most expensive one instead of the cheapest and your problems usually go away. 30.00 for a outdoor flood with a photo cell is not alot of money. Also check to see if the fixture is getting vibrations from slamming a door or anything like that, if the lamp is getting alot of vibrations it certainly will be short lived.

the light fixture is right above the corner of the garage door so that may be an issue. thank you.
