Well, the Zany zinnia hybrids - Part 2 message thread, [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] , is now up to nearly a hundred messages, so I am starting over for the same reason as before, to prevent the message thread from becoming even more unwieldy.
As a killing frost approached, I "rescued" a few "breeder" zinnias by taking cuttings from them. That frost finally occurred in the early hours of Oct 28th. This was entirely new territory for me, because I had never grown zinnias from cuttings before, and wasn't even sure that it could be done. It can be done, and isn't particularly hard. I still have a lot to learn to improve the asexual reproduction of zinnias, but I have a number of cuttings growing and blooming under fluorescent lights now.
For reasons I don't understand, the cuttings behave differently, and this one became a miniature bush with miniature flowers, reminiscent of a miniature rose. To establish scale, its pot was made from the bottom half of a 2-liter soft drink bottle, and is 4¼ inches in diameter. Its flowers are 1½" and 1¾" in diameter. I plan to remove them and try to encourage vegetative growth to obtain a much larger plant.
