Hi, I purchased an old aluminum tray that is hand pounded and also engraved. Inside the engravings there is a lot of brown--either scum or rust (can alum. rust?) I soaked in soapy amonia water and then scrubbed w/ SOS pad but it didn't really work. Any other suggestions?
Bar Keeper's Friend will clean it like new. My sister collects hammered aluminum and has over 50 pieces. She cleans it with BKF. Don't let it dry.
Polish with a soft cloth after you rinse. It is an old, old product. Find it in the cleaning aisle. Powder in a paper can. Some sort of mild acid in it. Your fingernails will nice and clean.
I keep a supply of old worn out soft bristle toothbrushes for working on things that have grime in etchings or carvings, etc. They work well and don't scratch.
Love BKF too, my most used cleaner. Also for aluminum I like to use Mothers Mag & Alum polish. You can find it at an auto supply or the auto parts section of WalMart. Takes a fair amount of arm labor but works well.
