I need help picking a color to paint my front door. I live in an L-shape ranch. The house has tan siding with greyish-blue shutters. The trim and garage door is white.

What color would look best for the front door?

Can you post a picture of the house? That might help visualize how the other colors relate to each other now. You could match the door to the shutters or the trim, or you could spice it up with a splash of a brighter color, but since you've already got 3 colors going on I'm not sure if you want to add a 4th or not--that's why a picture would help. Or you could consider painting the shutters to match the trim or the trim to match the shutters, then add in another color for the door. If you paint the shutters white to match the trim, then I think a red door would look really nice. Red might look OK with the grayish blue too but it's hard to tell without seeing a picture.

I suggest a color splash color! Try red, dark orange, bright blue (not a navy)hot dark pink, apple green, etc! Think of the doors of Ireland.

Tell you the truth, glossy black may look good.

Most doors are white for a reason. If sunlight hits a dark-colored door it can warp.

What kind of cheap door are you using? Also West Sand lake is not in a very hot climate. He/she might be using a metal door which makes that point moot.

If you're talking to me, I'll hang whatever door the architect specifies, and they're generally not cheap, believe me. Cold climates may have worse problems with this because the temperature extremes are greater, but it's not a good idea to paint a door black in a sunny location, anywhere.

Read the part about finishing, most manufacturers have similar advice in the fine print. This one's in bold print, and it will void the warranty.

That's a surprise. We have high humidity 90%+ and heat then durning winter we get down in the 20's with 30% humidity. Most damage to doors around here is from humidity and rotting. Anywhere water can puddle will rot out. Most people have colored doors with dark colors like Charleston green (a very dark green) and black. Chatleston green comes from way back in history. Maybe we just have enough humidity to never worry about the door drying out?

I do know the most important thing is to paint or seal every side of the door.

behr.com is a great place to make decisions on paint. Using the site as a consultant I would say use the blue family of the shutters in the darkest shade. If you have never done it before go play on the behr.site it is a lot of fun. shirleyt
