We removed a portion of some cupboards in our 1942 home (kitchen). The stuff is light grey and suspect it is plaster, right? Can I paint right over it or should I prime? It is a space about 3 x 2 ft.

It's plaster, and definitely prime it, if you don't it will suck up paint like a sponge.

Thank you Paul. I just realized on another wall there is a hole where the plaster fell out when pulling out cupboard. Maybe the size of a cd. What do I use to fill that? And while I am picking your brain is there anything recommended to camouflage a crack? Again, thank you. Mary

If the crack is not too big use spackling compound, a larger hole can be filled with patching plaster.
