Time to break out the Champagne and sing that old reliable song no one knows all the words to. Yes, it is almost 2008. So bring your party dress and shoes, noise makers and all drinks will be on the house through the new year. Let's make this the most trendy spot to be for the new year. Bring in your art, dresses, fireworks, drinks or anything else you need to celebrate, because we are going to make 2008, GREAT!!

Good morning all. I see we are all set to celebrate. I'm afraid my image is a bit dark for our celebration but it's where I'm starting from today. Art doesn't always fit the slot but I think that's good and provocative, yes?

sempervirens, I was studying your painting and thinking it looked comforting and spiritual. The halo around the head of the kneeling woman seemed to say she has a peaceful aura and the glow of the figure behind her seemed to radiate a field of protection. It looked as if they were inviting the third figure to come closer and shed the cloak of loneliness. Then I noticed the title and was suprised at how different my interpretation was from your intent. Art is strange how it draws different emotional responses from different people.

Hi Semper, I love your markmaking skills, there is something else to see everytime I look. I wonder what the crisis is?... it's like they are waiting for something to happen. I see a snake coming down on the left.
Thankyou for a very interesting piece. I will add it to the 'new year show' in gallery 1.
Hope you all can call in to the party !

No prob!!

I must admit, I see crisis, but this is my mood. You are so true, Zany, about drawing out different emotions. I wonder if it draws even more when you emotions are leaning one way or another at the time of viewing?

The "hand" on the shoulder can only provide comfort but cannot fix the crisis and the expression is one of resignation, at least this is what I see. The other person? is there in the room, but unable to say or do anything and feels akward in the situation. Almost turning away from the woman as if ignoring it will keep her from having to deal with the person in crisis. I am probably totally off, but I know the feelings of all three described above, so I threw my 2 cents in.

pupilpropogtr,
I am sure that what I percieve in any piece of art is strongly affected by my mood, my outlook on life, and my personal life experiences. It is also influenced by an artists name for a piece. With this piece I viewed the painting and felt it's effect first and then ,after the fact, saw the title which would no doubt have lead my thought processes in a totally different direction.

Good morning all. Thank you Traci, terri and Zany for your carefully considered viewing and commenting on my art work. It is a true gift to the artist to be viewed seriously and thoughtfully. I believe all your comments ring true to my original intent . Dark Night is one of the pieces in an ongoing series of War. I find the longer I work on it the more I try to provide safe places in some of the pieces.

This is the 1st piece in the series

sempervirens, Target practice is frightening! I took one glance and thought I was back in L.A.in the middleof a gang war. I showed it to my DH and he immediately said "Viet Nam" and looked away. Artistically you definately captured the feeling of war... but I sure wouldn't want that one in my living room! To emotional for me to handle I'm afraid.

Terri, you are definately right, this was a good idea for a cafe'. I have enjoyed it so much and have learned and plan on trying some art. Could be really funny!

Weeds, I love that idea. What is a bridge tally? Last year I took old valentine postcard reproductions and decorated them with ribbons, tiny fake flowers, glitter, little birds, well just about everything really. They were for Teensy's class. I loved doing it and now you have given me a good idea for this year. Anymore ideas you or anyone (hint, hint) could share would be appreciated. I would love to give handmade cards again this year, but a little different, like yours.

pupil, A bridge tally was used and still is to keep bridge scores, when playing the card game. Bridge parties were a big part of a lady's social life , with special decorative tablecloths, snacks etc. as people would take turns hosting these parties in each other's homes. My collection is from the 20's and 30's...they are very decorative as you can see. Will post more as i finish them. The artwork on them is great, very art-deco. Now with the use of printers one can have quick artwork to use for embellishing. Ebay has auctions for them, some of my collection came from Ebay, but most of it was collected through the years. You could usually find them for a dollar each...but now, some start at 5 dollars on up to much more, as people are discovering their charm! sue

No problem Pupil, since these are foam core hearts,,,when you purchase them at Michael's crafts, they have a red foil on them...Here is how to make one: Use the heart form for a template, trace onto the back of your chosen paper, the heart shape, cut out carefully..trim any overlapping edges, make sure they are stuck on well, i use a running scrapbook adhesive, from JoAnne's...(i use "Duck" Easy stick permanent tape) you do not want to use any liquid glue, as it will buckle your paper. Once your paper is trimmed to the heart shape...SAND with a medium sandpaper around the edges to finish them off, this is an important step..after you have applied your layers of edging, decorative element, and sanded, take an ink pad and run it around the edges and slightly at an angle to give the idea of aging, this is a permanent ink stamp pad,(many to choose from in your scrapbooking section of craft stores,) color of your choice..i use blacks, browns, reddish, . Be careful with this step, as whatever ink gets on the piece stays there!! Go slowly..and add the "antiquing a little at a time! here are 3 more i had posted on another forum..to give you an idea of the varieties of embellishments one can use. The antiquing step "marries" the embellishments to the piece?! Any questions, feel free to ask! I have learned many of these techniques by being on a papercrafting website and reading about this in magazines etc. It is fun and easy, once you know the tricks! thanks for your interest! sue

Thank you Fleurone too! Forgot to mention, you can do this technique on almost any surface! Wood, metal, plastic...you just must be careful to use the right adhesive for the right surface...other than that there are so many possibilities...many magazines devoted to this craft..."Gift Maker" PaperCrafts, etc. etc. It is much like decoupaging..i don't use any varnish or top coat...you could if you wanted to? Would be a good idea..i like the old paper finish on the hearts. some of the tallies are too large, so you will notice i crop them as i fit them to the heart.glue them down first then trim and sand...watch out it is an addictive hobby...can be expensive too...if you go into scrapbooking stores...it is like a candy store to me!!! sue

Yes, Pupil!! It IS overwhelming isn't it? Since i have collected more plants through the years than i can handle..i have developed another buying vice, and that is papercrafting items! Michael's and JoAnnes, certainly know how to take our dollars...don't even think about going to a Local Scrapbooking store! They have even more cool goodies, for the crafter!! And not as reasonable as M's and J's! I get their 40 Per cent off coupon and use them for the more expensive "must haves!"...soon you will be awash in stuff, if you are not careful! sue it is an addiction...

Hi, this is my first time in the cafe'. What a lovely place!

Curlers, I love your work - pine needles and gourds? I have some Christmas roses out blooming under the snow that would look lovely in the basket.

fleurone, beautiful paintings. I especially like the rather prismatic looking woman.

Beautiful tulips, terri, I spent part of the afternoon ripping some silk tulips apart so that I can use them in a wall hanging.

I've been cleaning the study. Stan's been up here working on his computer doing the farm year end books and it's easier if I stay on the same level of the house, so I cleared off the work table, sorted stuff, threw away some things that have been hanging around waaaay too long and found some fabric pieces that I'd painted last summer and forgotten about. Stan asked if I was getting ready to do new projects and I told him I had several to finish, but I'd probably lay out some new ones as well. He laughed and said he believed the part involving new projects, but wasn't so sure about the finishing. Anyone else have ufps hanging around?

It is snowing, lake effect snow that looks like a million feather pillows shaken out. As there is no organized storm, it will snow and snow and snow and then suddenly break out in sunshine. It has been a lovely day to spend in the study and to drop in here.

Are you the same Kathleen who made the beautuful fibre artworks?
Your wall hanging with tulips sounds interesting, I would love to see that! I have lots of projects not finished, join the club!! one day I will get around to it!
Love your description of the snow, it sounds beautiful.
Enjoy a cuppa and stay warm. Thanks for popping in!

I had a little arts and crafts evening with my friend on Sat night. I had bought a strand of led white dragonfly lights - which I thought boring, so went to the art supply store and bought some glass paint, and painted them everywhich way..we had a fun time! and they turned out rather spiffy...trying some humming bird lights next.

I put a couple more pictures here in my blog...you can see the whole strand.

Hi Terri - Gorgeous arrangement and my favorite color to boot.

The weather in the part of Virginia where I live has been crazy all winter, along with the rest of the USA. Just a few weeks back we were having warm days so that people were walking around in shorts, tee shirts and sandals. After that went on for a week or so, we began having freezing temperatures. Just so crazy.

The past week or so it has been about ten degrees above freezing for the most part. Much too cold for me to go outside most days. As I get along in years, I cannot tolerate things as I used to.

Thanks for all the you add to this thread Terri. I enjoy reading the posts.

I believe that this is a sunrise in Atlantic City last January when my husband and I spent a week after the holidays. Great colors huh?

Kathleen, have you got any pics for us, huh, huh??? I love seeing new art and ideas!!

Wren, yipee, glad to have you back. What have you been working on lately? I have got to take a pic of the piece of wood I found. I need your expertise to do something with it!

Jmcdowell, I know you have other threads of your art, but would you pretty please, post some of your work. It is stunning. I especially love the little boy.

RJ, Very quick thinking on the lights. I would love to have those placed around the garden.

Hiya Fleur!!

Terri, well you know how I feel about the purples, but the red is fantastic too! I want you to hop over the pond and come teach me, please!

Hmmm, wonder what I could find to eat...

here's a little flannel quilt that I made for my youngest granddaughter using leaves that I'd picked up around their yard for the patterns. It's a chill wet morning with a promise of dropping temps and snow on the way. A flannel quilt is just the ticket.

Kathleen, your Grandaughters quilt is gorgeous, and lovely that you made the design for it with leaves from her own yard. Thanks for sharing.

Sandy, Thanks for calling in with a beautiful basket. How is the work going at the museum?

It's been very mild here! I had a walk around the garden the other day, it's starting to come back to life.

Quoted:

Funny you should say that, Kathleen. I noticed the other day how amazing they looked when they were dying. The petals were completely spread out and almost looked tropical. I wish I had taken a picture.

JMC, that is truely remarkable work.

Fleur, I am fascinated by the haunting effect you are able to create. I love it all.

Roybird, have you posted here before? If not, welcome!! Those watercolors are wonderful. You sell them as greeting cards? If you don't mind, D me your website, if you have one.

Kathleen, it is a bit warm here for flannel quilts, but I would not mind at all to have yours displayed on a chair.

Curlers, give us an update on the museum, please!! The tornados didn't hurt Birmingham, but a city called Moulton, 30 minutes from my hometown of Sheffield, lost 3 people. They were unbelieveable. Notice how I live in British named towns. :^)

Terri, can I borrow your wellies the next time it rains?
