Hello everyone. This is coming from Seedsower's thread of inspiration for me... [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

I just purchased the same Woolie that she used to do her gorgeous walls. Hopefully it will be here in a few days. I don't know how soon I'll start using it though...I have a bit of a dilemma...

What colors to use with it? I love the look of Seedsower's walls. I'm thinking of doing neutral colored walls with white trim. Then using the bright, bold colors to liven up the rooms with my accessories and window coverings, etc. What do y'all think? Looking for suggestions...

Thanks,
Heather

I guess I should add that I'm thinking of starting in my living room. We have a taupe couch with heavy burgundy accents, it also has the bold green, blue and yellow in it. The carpet in there is a rusty brown/tan. Icky carpet that is way too old and needs to go.

Also thinking of staring in our entrance room. Maple laminate wood floors in there. Our front door is steel, but hasn't been painted yet. It's white, but could be any color of the rainbow. Our stairway starts in this room and is carpeted with the same ugly carpet as the living room.

Really wanting new carpet, lol.

Golds, in my opinion, look really good using the double roller. I have a Wall Magic roller. It was in another house and a fews ago since I've used it, so I'm not sure what the colors were. I went to SW and got some of their paint cards and picked the gold I liked the best, then used the lighter color of gold on the same card. Therefore insuring I was in the same family. Different, yet in the same family. Gave it a washed looked. You want a mid/dark color and mid/light color. IMHO anyway ☺

I finally decided on my colors last night...I'm pretty sure I decided anyway, lol. Brown w/ tan for three walls and then a dark and light sage green for the fourth wall. I've picked up a few things with red in them to mix that in as well. I still haven't gotten my Woolie yet, but that's ok for now. I want to put primer on my walls...all my walls. I also have to paint the ceiling and the trim, so there's lots to keep me busy in the meantime. I'll post some pics once the job is started.

heather, good luck in your endeavor. i painted our bathroom 2 years ago, first time i ever painted anything! i wanted to use a faux pattern and woolie, so i ended up with a pattern i call "slum chic". i added a bit of distressing to cabinets and molding and was very pleased with the results. this small bathroom formerly had dark wallpaper with a hideous floral pattern.
it was a lot of fun but took me 3 months to finish!!
here are some pics.
this wicker cabinet was a hideous tan color.

detail of the wall texture. i smeared a lot of putty and plaster and stuff to give a lot of texture, then took some off, then added some more, on and on. this is why it took 3 months :-)

Gorgeous pics and paint jobs! Wow, I really needed that for inspiration. We went shopping for the paint yesterday...so we looked at paint, curtains, rugs, throw pillows...seems like we looked at everything in Wal-Mart so I was on my feet forever and my back has been screaming at me all day today. I've been lacking the get-up-and-go I had a few days ago. Your pics have made me want to get started again.

I really like the cool, fresh, clean feel of the colors in your bath. Your kitchen is the colors I'm going after...trying to get. We'll see how it turns out. I've done plenty of faux finishes before, but all by hand and never with one of these fancy rollers. I can't wait to try it. I just got an e-mail that my woolie should be here tomorrow! I better get busy, huh?

By the way, here's a pic of the color/shades I'll be using. I'm not 100% certain, but I think I'll be using "Shade Tree" with "Winter Pine" and then "Baronial Brown" with "Brazilian Tan". How do y'all think that'll turn out? I'm figuring that once the technique is done I'll end up with a color somewhere in the middle as the most predominant shade...with bits of everything mixed in from the lightest to darkest. Please tell me if I'm figuring this wrong!!!

I know these colors won't come out in this pic just like they do in real life, but this will give y'all an idea of what I'm working with. I got tinted primer last night in "River Road" and "Shade Tree" to prime all the walls. Ok, enough gabbing, time to get to work!

Thanks!
Heather

Ok, so you can't read the names on the paint swatches. I thought you would be able to. This pic should help, I marked the colors I'm thinking of using. What do you think? Should I move down a shade for the lightest green? I don't want mint green walls, I want light & dark sage. I'm just concerned about the amount of contrast between the two colors.

I'm open to any ideas and suggestions anyone may have!

love the colors! i trimmed my kitchen cabinets in a mint green shade.
don't worry about too dark; i found myself applying whitewash to many areas to give dark and light highlights.
just to get you going, here a a few more pics of my kitchen. before the makeover, the cabinets were very dark wood, in not really good condition. the kitchen was so dark it felt like a dungeon and we rarely sat in there. we love it now!
good luck heather, keep me up on your progress.
this pic was in the midst of painting (i'm still scraping paint off the floor, i am such a slob)

IMHO, the colors should be closer in the same color family. On the green, it looks like it says 'Verde Antique'. I would use that color with the other darker green marked. They do mix to a certain extent, so you do have to be careful about what color you might be mixing together. For the tan, I like the dark one, but I'd probably use the shade just above. The browns are showing awfully pink on my monitor, until you get to the one just above. Again, that's just my opinion. The deeper, the darker ths shade it is, the happier I am. Also, the paint works better if you use glaze mixed in with the paint.

Maryann, I LOVE your kitchen! I would love to have pink in the house, but DH just won't allow it. He's such a MAN! Of course, I can't have flowers on my comforter/bedspread either...I think he's afraid he'll go to sleep one night and wake up as a woman the next morning. tee hee hee.

Terry, the instructions on the Woolie site say to use colors that are 3-5 shades apart and not to use glaze. I would opt for the darker colors, like you suggested, but I've read a few places where folks said they tried that and they just didn't get enough contrast. You are right about it saying "Verde Antique"...how did you ever read that? LOL! The funny thing is I have the "Verde Antique" in my living room and kitchen now. There must be 1,000s of paint colors, but I walk in and pick the same exact color every time!

I have some furniture I'd like to paint too. I'm not sure of what pieces yet, or what color I'm going to make them. I know I want to paint my little bookshelf. It's just a cheapy from WM. I'm also thinking of painting my hutch in the kitchen...it was my DMIL's, but it's in bad shape right now.

I think I might be turning into one of those "if it doesn't move...paint it!" people.

I spent most of today getting the Christmas decorations down. What a job that was. DH has to get the tree out when he gets home (which should be in about 5 minutes). I've never seen so many pine needles on the floor as this year. I sucked an ornament up in the sweeper so I had to take that all apart. But, time to quit gabbing again...

These pics really are helping to keep me focused, thank you!!! Send more...you too Terry! :)

Heather, yes they do say to use colors that are farther away, but in the case of the colors you've shown, they don't even look in the same family. The 2 I suggested however, are similar enough, yet one is dark and one is lighter enough, I believe, to work. The glaze makes the paint so much easier to work with. The paint stays wet, to keep working with it to get the effect you desire. It doesn't lighten the color or anything. Unfortunately, the pictures I did have of the 2 rooms I had used the wall magic on, were on a computer that crashed and I didn't have the pictures backed up. We don't live in that house any longer either. I could read what the color was because I keep a magnifying glass in the desk drawer ☺ Rustoleum makes a spray paint that is for furniture. It's called American Accents. It works really well. Painters Touch by Rustoleum is another nice one. I used the Painters Touch primer, but the American Accents for the finish.

Many paint manufacturers will sell you small samples of the paint, that way you could get several of your colors and test out which combinations look the best.

I did look at the paint samples, but they were less than a quart and 1/2 the price of the gallons. I'm too cheap to do that, LOL!

Ok, so, here's my update...
We primed the walls with tinted primer. I Woolied them with the pad, I hated it. I Woolied them with the double roller, I hated that too.

I ended up painting the walls the Verde Antique...I had some left over from painting the living room and kitchen. Then I got me some glaze and mixed it with the Shade Tree. I ended up color washing it on. So simple and easy. So far I only have one coat on, but am planning on maybe mixing in some other colors and probably ending with another coat of Shade Tree.

I have to say that the color washing is very easy and I love the look of it. You do have to work fast unless you buy an extender to mix in with the glaze (which I didn't). You can see that some spots are a lot darker than others. I'm figuring that will work out fine since I'm going to do multiple coats.

Here's a pic of the first coat of glaze. I'll update as I do coats...if I have time.

Allrighty, I waited 2 hours for the first glaze coat to dry...then had an emergency call about a possible rabid raccoon running around in the middle of town (that took a bit)...but finally I got a second coat of glaze on. This coat was lighter and I wasn't positive I was going to like it, but I LOVE it! Now I'm trying to decided if I should add a bit of mustard yellow or tan/brown to give it an aged appearance. I don't want to take a chance of messing it up now.

Here's how it looks right now. I can't believe how much more depth the lighter color gave it. I was afraid it would wash it all out, but noper. :)

Looks great! I like it just the way it is, I'm having trouble picturing what it would look like if you mixed in the mustard yellow. If you think you might like it though, if there's a hidden area where you could test out a bit of yellow you could do that, or else get a piece of plywood or something and paint it the same way you did the wall, then add the yellow and see if you like it better. That way you're not stuck redoing the whole wall if you like this look better.

PS Hope you caught the rabid raccoon!

I ain't touchin or goin anywhere near any raccoon! DH saw it while he was working and called me about it. He said it was walking like a zombie and following two little girls. It crossed the main highway in town. Very strange. I looked up rabies and found out that animals who have it are not always ferocious, but can just become depressed, or flip-flop from depressed to attacking. After making a few calls I ended up having to call the police. We don't have animal control here.

The poor raccoon also had a huge clump of hair missing from it's tail. Maybe it just got hit by a car, but still very strange behavior and not worth taking a chance on. The authorities can deal with this one. I'm hoping I don't ever see it! I feel bad for it though, poor little creature.

I'm still trying to decide on the yellow. Maybe I'll sleep on it.

Thanks y'all! I'm really liking it too. DH likes it too, that's important, sometimes he's really not into this stuff.

I think I do know what you mean by cheapen it...make it look fake and too much "on purpose".

I'll get a close up later tonight if I can. DH is working nights right now, and he sleeps on the couch when he's on nights so I wait for him to get up before I paint.

I'm planning on doing the windows/wood work/trim all a soft white. It's a pre-mixed color called Country White. I don't want stark white against the faux finish. I've already painted the ceiling the country white and I love it. Of course, the ceiling is flat and the trim will be semi-gloss.

I'm hoping to get out there and put on another coat of the darker glaze tonight. I'll let you all know.

I am thinking about the double roller method how did you do the color wash method? I have never done the double roller but yours looks great with the color wash.
