We need to purchase a new toilet soon. I thought I'd just pick one for its appearance but after doing some research on the new 1.6 gal per flush toilets I got very nervous and decided we need a lot more info before buying. Does anyone have any recommendations? We've heard that Toto makes the best 1.6 gpf but they are more expensive. Are they worth it? Also some people mentioned installation difficulties with some of the Toto toilets. I'd sure appreciate any advice.

We inherited an Eljer low-flow toilet with this house. It's been satisfactory, but one caution is that low-flow can turn into overflow if it is "overloaded" (if you get my drift). ;-)

Courtesy flushes are the norm with all the low flow toilets I've encountered.

I don't mind the courtesy flushes, it's the overflows that I dread. Thanks for the tips.

Just bought a 2nd Kohler toilet that is 4" higher than normal. Flushes great! $204.00 at Lowes.

Just don't get a cheap one. This is one of those times where money talks, BS walks. LOL. Almost all lines have their low, average and higher end toilet.

I so appreciate the advice. Maybe we're overreacting to the scary stories about the 1.6 gallon flush. I just don't want to go from bad to worse, toilet-wise. Thanks for the help.

Those work well but a bit pricey. On the hand how often do you need to buy a tiolet? How offten do you use it? Might be worth it. LOL.

Golddog,
Can you tell me the name of that Kohler toilet?

Also, does anyone have experience with the Toto brand? It gets lots of good reviews online but this weekend I used one in a public restroom and with just a little toilet paper in it, it overflowed. There must have been a clog before I got there but still it's not too encouraging. (don't you just love having to tell the person at the register that the toilet overflowed -"It wasn't my fault - really!!")

chris,

Kohler Highline.
Complete Solution Toilet.

It is 4" higher, making it great for adults and seniors.

Really flushes! 1.6 gallon flush. Hold down the handle for a full flush, or release early for water saving flush.
