Which is which (Quinata or Shirobana)?

Beautiful! I snapped a quick pic of teh purpler (is that a word?) fruit at abotanical garden in NJ last year, and have been googling my eyes out trying to find what it is. I should've known to check DavesGarden first!

I've heard teh fruit is edible... true? Does it taste good? Which variety tasted best? I want to try to grow this on the border of zone 7 & 8.

The A. quinata is the purple one. (Shiro means white/snow in japanese and therefore is the white flowering and fruiting one).

I've actually tasted the fruit and I think it tastes like watermelon, but the texture is very jelly-like... so watermelon jelly. Overall it's kind of gross and the seeds get in the way :)

great info--thanks. I wish I woulda grabbed some seeds when I snapped that pic (shame on me). It looked so strange, I reasoned it was either very palatable or very posionous :).

thanks!
