Greetings,

I've just spent the morning searching the Internet for a sweater pattern. I'm looking for a BASIC, stockinette stitch, crew neck, cardigan with buttons. Nothing fancy but I'd prefer to use worsted weight yarn.

Can't find such a sweater in the stores to replace a couple which are really wearing out; so I guess I'll have to knit one.

Can anyone help me save a bit of time by pointing me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Ann

Audrey - I replied to your D-mail. What you have may be just what I'm looking for.

Granny - I followed your link but am not a member. It says "6392 people are ahead of you in line". So I will wait patiently for my invite and then check it out.

Thanks to both of you.

Sorry ViolaAnn, thought I could circumvent that. I'm amazed at the info at that site.

There are a lot of free patterns available on knitty.com as well:

Hi Viola Ann (that's my mom's name!)

Did you look here?

http://knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/womens_cardigans...

There are almost too many to look through! Some of the sites require registration (free) before you can see the patterns... like Lion Brand.

Lots of free cardigan patterns here: http://garnstudio.com/lang/en/search.php

You have to put "cardigan" in the "search word" box.

Those "# stitches" under the pictures are the gauge so look for ones between 18 and 22 for worsted. You can, while you are searching under cardigan, put the "knitting tension/gauge" in... so if you put in 18 in that box, plus "cardigan" in the search word box, you will end up with all their cardigans knitted at 18 stitches per 4 inches.

Oh... editing this to add... this is what I was looking for in the first place when I got sidetracked by all the freebies (pattern hunting is so much fun)... here: http://www.knittingpureandsimple.com/cardi.html Not free, but basic - and although I haven't used any of their patterns I have heard good reviews of them.

Happy hunting!
Diane

Thanks to mermaid and Diane. I've looked through the knitty.com and knittingpattern central sites but not the others. As you mentioned, probably too many to look through at the latter. Certainly can spend a lot of time at it. I'll check out the sites I haven't visited.

Audrey (above) tried to email me scans of a pattern, but all I got were email messages that indicated a scan in the body of the message, but no attachment. We can't figure out why. Anyone a computer expert out there?

I like the garn site which gives thumbnails of all the choices. Sure speeds things up a lot.

Good morning,

I found one of the Knitting Pure and Simple cardigan patterns on ebay. The link is here:

No connection with the seller!

Thanks, Diane.

That looks perfect, but I've never bought off E-bay and don't plan to start now. (I REFUSE to have a PayPal account, and things get complicated with the Canadian border.)

However, I DID do a search for the pattern number and I'm starting to contact local yarn stores. I might be able to find it locally, or failing that there are a number of other sites that have the same pattern listed.

I have found a solution! Thank you to all who offered suggestions, but in the end, the solution was a made in Canada one. Patons is a large yarn company here and they have three books -

Patons Back to Basics I (for lighter yarns) Book # 500561
http://www.patonsyarns.com/patternbook.php?PBS=500561

Classic knits for kids 2-10 and adult's 32" -54". Basic vests / pullovers and cardigans. Instructions include a variety of sleeve options, as well as neck variations. Includes 6 pages of how-to-instructions. Raglan, Drop Shoulder and Set in Sleeves, as well as V-neck, Crew Neck and Turtlenecks for Vests, Pullovers and Cardigans, all sized to fit from a 2 year old child to a 3XL adult (22" x 54" chest). Shown in Patons DK, Sport weight yarns.

Patons Back to Basics II (for worsted weight yarns)
http://www.patonsyarns.com/patternbook.php?PBS=500562
Same options as above

Patons Back to Basics III (for chunky yarns)
http://www.patonsyarns.com/patternbook.php?PBS=500563
Same options as above

I bought books I and II for a bit less than $6 each. A great buy given the flexibility of design options and sizes available. (I won't have to look for another pattern for my granddaughter). And with some thought, I could add in patterns or cables as well.

Thanks again.

Ann
