Had seen this somewhere years ago, last fall was talking to my DB and explained it to him..well, now he has one..mine is coming this spring..because he did it late fall it's not completed..putting a metal roof and will add latice so that a flower bed and vines can be nurtured...as for me, he's asked that I try to get a fibreglass unit to save $$$ then wouldn't need the metal..so am looking forward to having one built..now when will that snow leave...

Neat idea, I once saw a satellite dish turned into an aquatic garden. I have no idea what they sealed it off with but the end results were quite spectactular. Funny how we don't think of these old satellite dishes as having the potential to serve us a second term of duty.

Very nice photo Bettypauze.

My husband had one of those huge satellite dish's s sitting out in our backyard for years! It was an eyesore! It had not been used in many, many years as we went back to cable! I kept telling him we could put it on the ground for a nice flower bed ... he just rolled his eyes. I knew it was good for something! About three years ago he dismantled the thing, sawed it into pieces and put it out for the garbage! I just could not convince him that there was a better use for it other than standing in the backyard as an unused satellite receiver!

Wait until I show him Betty's picture! Think he will listen to me in the future? I doubt it, but I am going to show him this great photo and what could have been!

Terrie,
Betty's right these are just mesh to start with... I've thought about using the fiberglass ones and sitting them lower for like around a doghouse as a shade... especially if they'd hold paint a bright colored one would look cool... For my plants though I wanted them to filter light...

Not to answer anothers question but if you put the word out your looking for free dishes and your willing to pick them up then you will start to get some calls. I picked up a 10 foot dish this morning off of craig's list. The big dishes have gone out of favor and many owners just want them out of their yard. Put wanted for free ads on bilboards in the country areas around Plano. Remember for many years these big dishes were the only option for the country folk who wanted to watch tv.

I have a lot of luck with freecycle.org if your wanting something you can post it on there and hopefully you'll get a reply. They have areas all over. Craigs list is wonderful too but if that doesnt work try the freecycle web site. Nothing on that site is for sale everything is free!!! I've gotten rid of a few things that way, locally.

I've used Freecycle, Craigslist, bulletin boards and at times I've simply stopped and asked the owners. I have ran into some that were not so friendly but the ones that are happy to let me have their dishes have been wonderful experiences. I've even met a few new friends that I now swap seeds with after having met them.

There is a trampoline frame on a thread somewhere, either t2t or garden art, I don't remember which. This person used half of the circle frame to make an arch, and hung plants from the pieces that would have been vertical to the ground, and I believe there was talk of planting vines to run on it. I found one by the road for pick up after that but couldn't talk DH into helping me get it. Oh well...one day.

Glad you all posted these great ideas! Saw this one on a 2006 garden crawl, and told DH last year this was what I wanted for my porcelainberry vine. He put an ad on freecycle and had one within a week. It's been sitting in the "barn" ever since, and I'm hoping that soon the guy who's going to put in a new watering system for us will put it up. It's beyond my skills and too far down on my "nag list", so I'm gonna have to pay to get it built...LOL!

We have one or maybe two more posts to do. I wanted as much open on the "front" (the area facing the rest of the yard) as possible. The guys sunk smaller diameter posts about 3-feet long into concrete and then slid these larger poles over the top. I can take a closeup of the hardware they used to attach the dish to the poles if you'd like. All the hardware is from HD---nothing special.

I haven't decided yet about painting the poles. I'm definitely going to leave the dish the muted gray that it's become over the years (it was probably black to begin with). Less maintenance, and I like the color.

I think the porcelainberry vine is going to be very happy in its new home. For now I'm leaving it alone to recover, but it will be nice to prune it & get it out of the trees behind it!

Since you have two, make a fountain using both. A friend of mine made one that way, using some river rock and grout to decorate it, then set them up one above the other for a waterfall. OR, make bird feeders out of them. I have a pretty good sized one I put on a post and use for a bird feeder. We feed hundreds of birds in the winter months.

Speaking of satellite dishes, here's our big one now, with the vine growing up one leg and around the rim. My DH got the propane heater free after it blew over in a storm and stopped working for a customer. He repaired, removed it from the base, and hung it. He has to modify it so the propane tank could be off to the side---you can see the black gas line wrapped around another leg. That leaves the center of the "floor" area open. We have an outdoor ceiling fan he got for $20 off the "giveaway" table at HD, and he's planning to put that in place of the heater in the summer.

We've had a couple of BBQs since we got the dish up, and it makes a GREAT gazebo!

As I recall, ours is a 10 ft, but I think an 8 ft would work just fine. After seeing ours a couple of times, my son now wants one, too.

I think my DH told me they came in 8 ft, 10 ft and 12 ft. Of course the 12 ft were MUCH more expensive, so there are a lot fewer of them available. Ours has plenty of room for 4 chairs and a small firepit. An 8 ft would probably have room for 4 chairs, but not the firepit. We keep ours open on one side so we only normally use 3 chairs, but we've had as many as 8 people under it and around the edge.

You might lay out a tape measure where you think you want to put it, and see how much room it takes up. You might be surprised how big it is.

Here's ours last week with the vines almost covering it, and the new small LED Christmas lites around the edge. I'm just thrilled with it!!
