I saw it on the way home from work. Of course I went back to look. It was a glass top table with a heavy *faux bright brass* base. I know its faux because the *brass* is peeling! Of course it went into my truck☺ The chairs are junk. I will salvage the casters & bases. I think I'll strip the *brass* and paint it to look like black cast iron. I'm not sure what to do with the glass. It's smoke grey. I thot about painting the underside but what color(s)? Artist I'm not:( Can a glass tabletop be re-ground to remove the scratches?
I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Hey Lor!
Good score on the table. How about mosaic on the table top?

Or etch the glass - they have wonderful stensils you can use or make your own. You could even personnalize it with your family initials, use something that matches your decor, or do a garden theme. Maybe you could arrange it so the etching covered the scratches?

Thanks zen, I saw that table a while back. (it is gorgeous). It may be the reason I stopped to look at the one I got! But it has a nice glass top, just a little scratched and it's smokey grey. The base is heavy, but not as heavy as the glass:( I had to load it by myself. It's pretty much late 80's-yucky faux brass:( We have a picnic table and a small round bistro table and chairs outside. (needs a top). Our dining table needs to go away, (good craft table). So I think if I can refinish the base and *hide* the glass, it will come in the house☺
I intend to mosaic the bistro table, collecting tile now☺

I finally took a pic of the base. I think it will look better painted black. Bright brass is not my style.
The glass top looks like a square w/o corners but its not round either.
shellydar, I like the etch idea more and more. If I do it to look like cracked ice, it would hide the scratches. You know the design I mean? I had to get a piece of it cut once to replace in a window. But I dont know how easy it would be to etch.

If you look where they have glass paints at Wal-Mart or Michaels I think they have an "etching" paint.

Thats ok, I've been forgetting to post the pic after I say I will! On more than 1 forum and dmails.
Thanks, I will look for it.
BTW, have the Wally's in your area gotten rid of most craft supplies? They did here, the yard-goods too. Now we have 1 & 1/2 aisles. I like Michael's better anyway.

What a wonderful find! I like your idea of the wrought iron look for the base.
If you want the base to look like wrought iron use a matt/ flat finish paint so it doesn't look like a shiny black enamel. To get the cracked ice look for the glass use a crystallizing glass stain like this one at http://www.jurgenindustries.com/crystalglasscracklepaint.htm

Use the glass paint on the underside of the glass since it would get scratched up on the surface and be sure to work in a well ventilated area!

Etching a design into the glass is pretty simple also. Directions are on the jar and at least here they have the etching acid at Michael's. You can use clear contact paper to cover the table top and cut out the design with an exacto knife for the areas you want etched.

Advantage to the crystalline paint is that if you don't like it you can scrape it back off with a razor blade.

Advantage to the etching is that it is permanent.

slowtornado,
I talked to a girl in the craft/fabric dept. in a Wally close to me, She said they were cutting the fabric/craft out of a lot of stores and not putting them in at all in a lot of new stores being built.
I sure hope they don't cut mine its a 100 miles to any where else.

Thanx for the link Zanymuse. That site needs a permanent spot at the top of DG pages!
I like the etch idea better though. I want it to be permanent. And you're right about the base, I dont want it to shine.
Cheryl, I know what you mean about Wally. I have found myself hating them more than once. I think corporate did a major overhaul. They decided *Hobby Lobby* & *Micheals* etc. could divvy up the craft sales, and they would take everything else! And look at all the room they gained by kicking the crafts out. So they have everything else in most stores, even used cars in some. But sometimes I want to talk to someone whos old enough to remember the 60's! I do try not to go there so much. ☺←sorry, thats me ranting!
But if there's something specific you need and cant get anymore, let me know. There are no less than 7 wally's in wichita. They are all Supercenters. I love to shop!!! And its not 100mi. away.

I have etched several mirrors and it was WONDERFUL!!! First I traced, freehanded or stenciled a design onto the contact paper. THEN apply the contact paper to the glass or mirror, cut it with the exacto knife to expose only the area to be etched. Apply the acid, let it sit desired time & wash it off. It is ACID so be careful and read all the instructions.

I wanted a fancy new mirror in my bathroom and couldn't afford it. This was my compromise and both of the mirrors (2 different houses) turned out beautiful. Sorry, I don't have any pictures.

Thanx, I think etching is the way to go. I hope it will show up through the smoked glass. I hope I can get a pattern I like at SG class. On the other hand it might look better to just do the whole thing w/o a pattern.
I have to get used to taking my camera every time I work on something!

I finally took a pic of the tabletop, its behind the shower doors I want to do SG mosaic on.
I wish it wasnt smoked. I hope it looks ok with a black base.

I think the smoked top with the black base is going to be WONDERFUL! Maybe in addition to "etching" some design in BLACK would accent the gray/black design even more, just a thought! As my husband says, "Not every thought I have is a Winner."

Maybe you could silver leaf (gold, copper, whatever you like) the edge of the tabletop and seal it, too.

My tought first was a winter scene of a tree in snow. But that would be upsidedown or sideways on three sides. How about a pattern of snowflakes or lace. I agree that the dardk glass can be used to advantage.

Well, our last SG class is on the 11th. and she's showing us how to etch. ☺
I just hope it isnt too expensive. I looked at the bottles of etching acid at Micheals. I'll need about 20 of those teeny bottles since it says apply in a thick layer. 2oz. was about $6.00. ouch:( Unless I only etch a pattern on it. I dont want roses, birds or animals. Ivy or big leaves like EE's would be good.
Still waiting for good weather too, ha. It's 27° now.

Take 2 oz of any inexpensive hand lotion and smear it on glass in a thick layer. you will see that it goes a lot farther than you think :~)
