| charmers the wings are made of iridized textured glass that is clear, it shoes the terra cotta showing through. I cut the wings with my ring saw.

| Chickieemama, I have been looking at your mermaid again, she is stunning. I am just starting my first mosaic project and wonder if you wouldnt mind showing the tools and procedure you used to get those tiles into those beautiful shapes.
Thanks |

| misstiling...are you talking about the mermaid itself? For that I used a wet saw. (called a Taurus ring saw) It is the only way you can make the odd shapes like her hair. As for the rest of it I used a toyo glass cutter and mosaic wheeled nippers.
The pattern for the mermaid came out of a book called "Marvelous Mosaics for home & garden" by George W Shannon and Pat Torlen. The book has a lot of tutorials on learning to cut glass.
The outside fill is just glass cut into 1/2 strips then I cut pieces from those using the mosaic wheeled nippers.
If I can be of anymore help or didnt give you enough info let me know!!
I was (and still am) very proud of how she turned out. I was pretty new to mosaics when I did this. But the saw really makes those weird shapes possible. |

| Your memaid is beautiful, chickeemama! I have done this mermaid also. First as a stained glass panel and second, I cut out a piece of board the shape of the shell, as in the book, and hung it on the wall in my bathroom that has a seaside theme. It turned out great both ways!
Also, I believe in the same book, there are a couple of flamingo designs. I converted one of those to make a bird bath (like chickeemama's mermaid) for my MIL. She loved it! Actullly, chickeemama's mermaid was described as a tray. I believe it is a terra cotta tray. I have used these numerous times for bird baths. I take two terra cotta pots and glue the bottoms together for the base and set the tray on top. The birds love them (and they are the perfect height for my cat to get a drink of water)!! |
