Hey guys,
I thought you would be interested in seeing a video I made a while back of a drawing from start to finish. It runs about five minutes on windows media player (dial-up user warning). I made it as a demonstration video for a portrait drawing group I was in.
To see it better right click on it and play it 200%.
Let me know what you think. :)

Great from start to finish - and a beautiful drawing

I don't draw at all - but I always thought of it as placing various shades of grey/black on a white or lighter background --but creating the image with the pencils lines. Like what is important is the image created by the pencil ON the paper's whiteness.

Maybe it is a confusion caused by the technology of the video - the time lapse, etc., but it appears to me that the pencil's marks are used to isolate the white background more than putting the drawing ON it... As the pencil surrounds and isolates the white ..the drawing emerges. Does that make sense? I really saw it with the necklace... a big blob of white and then the pencil isolated the parts of the necklace rather than drawing the necklace ON the paper.. Guess it is six of one ..half a dozen of the other. (smile) Anyway, it is a different way of looking at how it is created. Thank You.

Thank you so much for the most informative video. I loved watching it and would like to watch it in real time so I can soak it all in. Fantastic, just fantastic and an exact replica of her. Laverne

WOW James! I'm speechless! I really enjoyed watching you draw Kate. The music that went with it was great too. How in the world did you do the time lapse video-ing?

Thanks Janet,
I set up a webcam over my drawing table. It came with a program that records timelapse. It ended up being a total of 7 or 8 different clips and I just strung them together.

Nice video, and nice sketch!

Good luck with the Mural biz!

Mac people can play Windows Media files by download a conversion player like VLC - which I believe has a free player.

Amazing!!!! jmcdowell, you don't use tortillons/stumps at all? I watched the video and I just see cotton swabs and pencils. I haven't tried tortillons before, I did get a gift set along time ago when I was a kid but I didn't do too well at it lol. I'll just stick with hatches and lines lol.

I love your drawing of the girl blowing bubbles - the detail of her fleece sweater, her eyelashes and the golden/light hair. =D.

Thanks evr,
No, I don't really use tortillons or stumps. In my more recent work, I haven't been using anything for blending.
I really prefer not to blend. I think so many people get carried away and over blend which is a big mistake.
Of course, for some effects, you really need it, but then I use a chamois, or felt squares, or and old t-shirt.
