This is my first ever "First Vote" on the voting booth so couldn't resist having a word to boot.

We had really warm weather , real early and then had a sudden late cold snap/ freeze in early april that killed or injured a lot of plants/trees and took out almost all the fruit crops in our area.

Ticker: I will be thinking of that scenario all day and laughing! I think it would be funny if Dr. Phil's wife, Robin were to have the tuxedo clad guys come to their house and rouse Dr. Phil out of bed and outside to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow! |

It is kind of like 6 more weeks of winter or 6 weeks till the last frost.
First day of spring don't come any earlier or later. It always gives one last cold blast after the first day of spring. Very rare if it don't.

I'm ready for spring, but I sure don't want a repeat of last year, so if we have to actually wait until April for spring to officially begin this year, so be it. I'm not sure how many of our trees and shrubs could take another late freeze this year - we could lose a lot of them if we did.

Well with 4 feet of snow on the level and snow permanent sinnce Dec. 1, I've had enough of winter! Having said that, living where I do, reagrdless to the weather on Groundhog Day, I'll still experience winter for at least another 2 months. |

we do not normally have freeze / frost that late, usaully March 23 is last frost, but last year things were not normal. ; - )
Everything had been growing for weeks and the fruit trees were in full bloom... and then a late freeze...and so we lost all last years peaches, plums and cherries, and most of the figs , too. Plus it really did a number on our perennials, crepe myrtles, and magnolia trees |

| I'm just laughing reading all this. Phil is not from Philly, he's about 6-7 hours from Philly at least...but only 1 hour from me. As someone said above, Phil is from Punxsutawney...a little country town in PA...nothing at all like Philly. I don't think Punxy even has a mall it's so little.
Anyhoooo, I doubt Phil would truly see his shadow if left to see it or not on his own. The sun hasn't been shining too much here lately, all rain and windstorms. Gusts to 60 mph last night.
I just checked Phil's page at [HYPERLINK@www.groundhog.org] and did some poking around. For the last seven years Phil has seen his shadow. I'd say it's time for him to NOT!
If I remember right the idea of him seeing his shadow is that it scares him back into his burrow for another six weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow then he comes out to bask in the sun. I dunno who came up with this stuff, they've been doing Groundhog's Day with Phil at Gobbler's Knob since 1887.
I just found this on Phil's website...To quote our Inner Circle president, "There are a lot of important events in life, and Groundhog Day is not one of them."...how could they say such a thing???? I hope no one told Phil! |

| i had to laugh reading all these replies, lol. i live 10 miles from Punxsutawney Phil and yes he lives in punxy, pa and i see him and his family all the time. he always see's his shadow except about every 10 years he doesn't. so i voted he would see it cause i think this is the 8th one for him to see it. it has always been a tradition here not sure what started it but ground hogs day is the day we all get together at gobbler's knob and freeze and get drunk and party, rotfl but not everyone does. i didn't go this year too sick too.
bill murray came here when they where gonna do the movie and it was never filmed here it is an old run down rinky dink town and they did not want to use it for the movie it wasn't good enough for them and they wanted a classier looking town to film it. it was filmed in another state all together if u watch the credits it says where it was filmed on location. the town of punxy was furious it was not filmed here. it in noway shows what the real punxy, pa looks like. we don't even have a mall the biggest attraction there is a walmart supercenter, rotfl.
honestly doesn't matter if the rat sees his shadow or not cause it's always 6 more weeks till spring either way here. it's supost to be if he sees it 6 more weeks of winter if he doesn't spring is just around the courner in another 6 weeks anyway so either way he is still right. it's just a tradition i think it's funny phil is the most famous weather rat cause honestly i've never heard of the others and as far as anyone here knows phil is the only rat that does it. people come from states around and sometimes other countries just to see him, every years thousands of people gather at the knob to see him. our schools do special things for him and grond hogs day is a holiday here for most. so needless to say i thought it was neat to see the replies to know there was others out there too who do it in different places.
one of the younger phils and part of the family live in a glass artificial habitat in the side of the punxy library behind bullet proof glass it's pretty kool to go and see them play, they live there year round. u can stand outside to see them or go into the library and watch them as u are reading from the inside. the older phil and the rest of the family live with their caretaker as far as i know somewhere else in punxy i believe. we have had several phils over the years some have passed due to old age and at least one was assasonated, poor thing, someone must not have liked his prediction. if i'm not mistaken the phil now is a girl and i can't remember her name it has phil in the front of it. philinia mabe? philis? at least that is the one used a few years ago anyway so phil is not always a boy.
anyways that's the run down on phil, looks like i live the closest to him,

| Well, we were honored by Bill Murray's presence in our town for the filming of "Larger Than Life". He used a bar called "Straight Home" next to the steel mill in my hometown of Granite City which I drive past nearly everyday. I believe that the scene actually depicted Pittsburgh, PA. Of course, the featured animal in this movie was an elephant; much larger shadow. |

| i'm not sure if they ever caught the guy that did it or not can't remember now. that's why the ones up in the habitat are behind bullet proof glass to protect them now.
when spring comes and it's not so cold here and i'm over being sick i'll go down sometime see if i can gets pics of them in their habitat without it reflecting off the glass hopefully and post some pics for ya all. see if i can take some of the town too since ya all post this question every year and some don't know who he is. although a fairly small old hometown it's really nice there and they do have some kool things there too. dh used to live there so he can tell me where would be good to take some kool pics. then ya all can see what the real punxy looks like and hopefully some pics of phil and family. i don't like groundhogs in the garden but they are very beautiful creatures. there has been times we take the kid's to the library just to see them and while they pick out books and read we sit there for an hour just watching the critters play and talk, it's really neat.
bill was kool when he was here and everyone loved it and enjoyed him comeing. it wasn't him that had the prob it was the film makers as i understood it cause it wasn't a high class enough town for them. they had imagined what the town looked like before comeing and had never been here before and once they all came were shocked it was not as glamorous as what they had thought it was from what others had told them. so they refused to shoot the film here said it didn't show the image they wanted deplicted in their film, that they where really dissapointed it was an old town and didn't want to disapoint all the viewers who would pay millions to see it. so it was shot in another state but i can't remember where now. bill said he didn't care he still wanted to come and meet the real people and meet the real town, if he was going to do the movie still he needed to know what the real groudhog's day was all about. so he came in the following week and everyone welcomed his arrival and we where all honored as well.
i've never heard of or seen that movie i'll have to see if i can find it to rent it, i like his movies he's a good actor. i hate going to pittsburgh it's to big city for me with to much traffic we always get lost, lol. the city is so gorgous to see at night though it's a beautiful place. it would be neat to see the movie though if that's what city it's about since it's so close to home, that's about 2 hours from me.
