Ivy is said to weaken trees by feeding on them but many trees seem to grow happily with ivy covered trunks, I'd guess an Oak tree would probably be to big to be much harmed by ivy. Most ivy I've seen on trees seems to be on trees with fairly thin trunks, maybe its harder for it to feed off bigger trees with thicker bark.
