These are two of my pictures/paintings. As you can see I like equines. I would like a critique of them. Do they look okay, eg. shading, color, lighting, symmetry? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your advice. This one is called "Equine Study".

Hi Moe,

Well I am not an artist, however I think they are Both Very good.

Really enjoy the First Light painting.

I think the Equins are done very well too. They look to me a viewer, to be shaded nicely, as if i were looking at a photo. Love the way you have his head turned to be looking at me...Actually the more i look They are Beautiful!
Wondering though did you sketch them with pencils or markers...I would be intrested to know what Media you used.

Well I DO hope you get some further critiques from actual Artists.

Your work is very nice, a fantasy, I think, light and airy.
I especially like the painting of the unicorn, shading is really good.
I wonder if you are interested in illustration, because your work looks like you might be.

I would be interested in seeing more if you have it available.

The 'Equine Study' I just used a ballpoint pen on note paper. I was at work and had finished my duties, so decided to do some drawing.
In 'First Light' I used a board canvas and oil paint. I lightly sketched the Unicorn on the canvas with a #2 HB pencil.

Moe, I don't usually post my paintings on DG, but will see if I have pictures available and will show you what Seed is talking about.

But I have a question...the word Aquene means quietness, I think...but it is also the name of a group people, or maybe a place in the area of the Pacific Islands, not sure. What is your meaning??

I taught art to high school juniors and seniors for many years. I also paint.
Here is the painting that Seedtosser was talking about, I think.

I have more, but not on DG.

And Natick is the name of your area? And the name of the original tribe of Native Americans who were in that area? Please forgive, I don't know a lot of the history, but it is a lovely sounding language. Are you NA, Natick? A part of your heritage? I was close with the aquene definition at least. That is a memory from years ago.

Thank you about my painting, I sold it a couple of years ago and it now lives near Baltimore.

Kawonkamish Sharran,

I live in Halifax, Massachusetts, but my ancestors are of the Chappiquiddic Band, Wampanoag Nation, First People of Chappaquiddick, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts and the Natick language is a part of the Algonquian language group(North Eastern USA). Here is a link to my tribe's homepage, it has more information about the tribe. [HYPERLINK@chappiquiddic.org]

I had started a weekly Natick language class in another gardening forum. It seems to be going well.

I have been looking again at your art work, and I can still see fantasy illustration. You know what would be interesting? Well, think of children's books, now think of the wonderful story/lessons that were told to you by your ancestors. If those were put in book form, with your illustrations as accompaniment, wouldn't that be beautiful? A gift for a child.

There is such fantasy and light in all of them.

If I were to critique as a teacher, I would say your only weakness is in the proportion of the girl's body, Sway. Example: elbows on a woman's body normally fall at about the natural waistline. Little things like that can throw a drawing or a painting off course. That's why it is important to draw the body before draping the clothing over it. So for whatever it's worth, that is my first critique. You drape the skin over the horse's structure perfectly.

I think animals must be your favorites.
Thank you for allowing me to see your work. It is very sweet, very light and airy. What do you do with it? Is there a place where it can be displayed?

Sleep well, Moe.
Peace to you as well.

Wunnee Quatauquaqua Sharran,

I never thought about illustrating a Native American children's book. I'll have to ask the Sachem YellowFeather, about that. See if she would write down the stories. As for my art work, I keep them in a portfolio. The walls in my house are loaded with my mother's oil paintings, so there's no room for mine... lol.

By the way, incase you're wondering... Wunnee(one knee) means good and Quatauquaqua(kwa ta kwa kwa) means afternoon.

Moe, I've been "listening in" and enjoying your art work and your language lessons. I was struck by the word Quatauquaqua. I live in Chautauqua County, NY in an area that was once watched over by the Seneca Nation of the Iroquoian confederation - keepers of the western door and I've totally exhausted my knowledge with this sentence. There has been much discussion of what Chautauqua means over the years and I don't think that anyone has found the true answer.

I agree wholeheartedly with Sharran's suggestion that you look into illustrating children's books of the stories of your people. I have a couple written by Joe Bruchac and his son of Abnaki tales.

There are a couple of processes where you can scan a picture into your computer and print it directly onto cloth. Generally, I use a soak called Bubble Jet 2000, which makes fabric accept inkjet ink as if it were fabric paint or dye. I've had some very good results working photos into wallhangings that way. Your unicorn would make a lovely wall hanging.

Sharron, I enjoyed reading about your grandmother and the poke sallit. Could you tell us about the "mouse ears" that you looked for? Mom has talked about going into the woods when she was young, looking for "little pigs". Wonder if they are the same? I'm thinking that she must have been looking for the blooms under the wild ginger plant leaves. Maybe not. I would really enjoy hearing more of your stories. My mother in law cooks poke like usual but she also cuts the stalks up and fries them like okra. She's still kickin' so guess the stalks aren't poison. Laverne

2vernes, the stalks need to be cooked to eat. Also they should be harvested when young, about 10-12 inches tall, as they mature they becomes poisoness, then they can cause nausea and vomiting. You never should eat them raw. It's also recommended, that they be boiled in several changes of water.

I checked around and it seems that Quatauquaqua is another way of spelling Chautauqua(contraction of Quatauquaqua, which in itself is a misspelling) It seems to mean:

Quatauqua/Chautauqua= mist or fog
auqua= place

It is derived from the word Teyushatuhkwaye, which means "for/where it to be foggy" and the added auqua makes it a 'place for/where it to be foggy'

I had to search the online Seneca and Mingo dictionaries to find it out.

My daughter teaches fourth grade in our local school and every November, she "builds" a longhouse in her classroom for the week before Thanksgiving. The class also goes to the Seneca Nation Museum in Salamanca, NY, which is about an hour east of us. I've sent your translation on to her.

When I was a kid, they (adults in teaching positions) told us that it meant "bag tied in the middle". I really don't know where they came up with that one!

Moe, I went back up through and your linoleum block zebra is great. I've been doing some printing with linoleum, wood and sticky stuff that acts like linoleum on fabric lately. I'm not really comfortable with the process yet, but they are starting to come out. I always thought I would like to do watercolors, but my product never equaled the process. Thank you. I liked doing it too. I'm glad your having fun with the block printing; I'd love to see how yours have come out. Unfortunately I only had the one linoleum block. I've got to get some more. I used tempera paint and watercolor paper to do it. I've only done two watercolor paintings. The horses in the stable and a sailboat on the water. I gave that one away to my brother in CA, so I can't show that one.

I'm thinking about trying my hand at wood burning. I just need to find where my Dad put the burner... hmmm. I also do bead work. I've made a few wampum necklaces. I use a loom and design my own jewelry. I just learned how to brick stitch and have made a few earrings and a necklace.

Great line work in the cat and I love the exercise...beautiful folds and positioning.

Well...same in the horse, just different medium.

Great work.

Actually, I've got a shop in an online craft website. There you can sell what you make, as long as it's handmade.

I saw that originally you started out with "Horses"!
I have always been fascinated with them & their form! Have spent hours upon hours sketching them just to refine the muscles & movements of these majestic creatures!!!! Have been at it for over 35 years & don't think I will ever capture any-thing like the real thing!!!!
A lot of people think I'm a little violent in my portrayal of them but I just love to see them in motion. Guess that's what they mean by "Artistic License"!!!
Would love to see more of your "Equines"!!!!

Don't mean to butt in on your forum but was very interested in your "ART"!!! Would love to see more of it!!!!!!!
Please pardon the glare---doesn't photograph well!
Have just now gotten back into my art after too many years. Enjoy chatting with other people with similar interests & guess this is the place to do it!!!!

Kawonkamish,

Sharran, I hope you have luck with the yard sale.

Camillia, I love your artwork. I love the flowing mane. I find that the hardest part of a horse drawing, getting the mane and tail to flow right. Your burnings and carving are excellent.

Mo,

Thank you!
It used to be hard for me to get them right also but spent hours upon hours filling countless pages, practicing.
Mine seem to be a little more fanciful than the real thing but unfortunately, as much as I would have liked, did not have much of an opportunity to study the "Real Thing".
I also love your jewelry!!! I see you sell on a web site--will have to check it out as I mostly wear Native American jewelry---used to play at making it but don't seem to have the time anymore.
Would still love to see more of your artwork.

Ladies, you both do wonderful work.
Camillia, I love the "fantasy" yours project.

And Mo, my dear, your jewelry is amazing.

Yard sale is driving me nuts, but otherwise OK. Will end tomorrow at noon...I hope!
Take care.

Sharran'

You are a better person than I! Don't do yard sales very well!
Have only managed to do 3 in 25 years & not very successful with them! Not my forte.
Thank you for seeing my work for the way I intended!

Mo,
Did not by any means, want to take over your conversation!!!!! Just wanted to chat with some-one that I felt might have similar "Art" interest s as I. I admire you & what you do with your art!
Can't say enough----follow your heart & what you really want to do with it!!!!!

Camillia...
You are wayyyy ahead of me. This is only my second yard sale in my entire 65 years. I figure...never again. Hate the things, but had accumulated way too much stuff. So now it's gone and that's good.

Six a.m. comes too soon, so I must tell you good night.

Keep up the conversation, and I will catch up over the weekend. I taught studio art for 37 years, and love to see art of anykind. I also have a local gallery where I show only work of local artists. Lots to talk about.

Nite, now, to both of you.
