I have an EXTREMELY beta interface setup for creating items for sale.

Please feel free to play around, but remember:

1) it's not live. I'll be deleting the stuff you enter later.

2) Not all features are in yet, by a long shot.

3) This is very rough.

4) I'm making this available to demonstrate the progress I've made so far, and to solicit feedback.

I'm really looking for extremely general feedback on the direction this is going. Please don't get specific, though, unless something very obvious is missing.

OK, I tried it, found a glitch.
Seems a nice, simple set-up, BUT..when I came to the page that says this:

Note: A minimum of one photo is required to sell an item through the DG Auction system. If you don't have a photo that is representative of your product, please come back when you have one.

It wouldn't let me go any farther, just kept coming back to it...so, if I don't have a photo I can't go farther.

Awesome! I cut and pasted one of our not-yet-listed eBay listings and it worked mostly great. We've been using a cascading style sheet, and that obviously isn't working. If you're not going to support that, that's ok. :-) I left the links to our photos embedded in the text and it found them with no trouble.

Simple and easy.

One note, that you may have already covered, is backwards navigation.

I entered one title and went to the picture adding page. I couldn't easily find a picture for the title I'd created so I thought I'd chose a different plant. No back button. Used the browsers back button, and the title was gone. Added the new title to one I knew where the pic was located, and went through the rest of the steps easily.

During preview and edit, the one I thought was lost, was in there.

I'm not sure if you're looking for that info now.

Making it easy for current sellers to cut and paste from existing templates and auctions will really help speed up populating it.

Nice work.

Good feedback.

Edit isn't enabled yet.

The "Create a new item" wizard will be re-worked completely later. What we have right now (the multi-page setup with no back arrow) will likely be completely replaced.

Overall impressions? Are we on the right track here?

The frown after the dutch auction was a frown because it's going to be an extremely difficult programming endeavor.

If I was like my competitors, I would just go use one of the pre-made auction softwares that are out there and available to purchase. I'm not like that, though. :)

It's an easy interface, Dave. Thank you. There were a couple of glitches, though.

In the" Viewing your auctions" page, the "Fixed Price" was not the fixed price I entered into the form. It was, instead, the number I put into the "quantity" box on the form. On the "Preview" page, the same problem occurred with the quantity showing up as the "Buy It Now" price, and nothing showing up next to "Quantity".

Please add a notice to the photo upload page that all images must be the property of the individual or that written permission must be obtained from the photo copyright holder before using anyone else's photos. Since this auction site is affiliated with DG, users may assume that they have the right to use photos from the PlantFiles for their auction ads. You're going to have to remind them that that's simply not the case.

I had one question about the page where you are offered

As a non-professional seller of plants on the web, and if I wanted to sell a hosta that I may not have a photo of my own plant... Where can one get permission to use a photo of the variety as a mature specimen, so the buyer knows what it will look like? I could certainly go outside and take a photo of the little eye buds coming up, but this would not help one to know what I have.

What places on the web allow you to use their images? What will acceptable practice be? I hear not the images from Plant Files. I would not think a vendor's site would be ethical. (Sandy takes great hosta photos and posts them in the forums...no, I won't use hers either :)

I just need direction to know how I would sell a plant on DG at this time of year.
If it were not my own photo, I would note this clearly. The more clear the page for the buyer, the more likely will lead to a happier transaction.

Please help give me some direction

If you see a pic in Plant Files that you like, you could always ask the owner of the photo if you could use it (same goes for pics that you find elsewhere on the internet). Some people would be happy to let you use their picture as long as you give them credit. Some may not want you to (particularly if they also want to sell some hostas!), but it never hurts to ask. The key thing is permission--I don't know of anywhere that you can find pics that you can use for something like this without asking anyone, but any picture's fine if the owner gives you permission to use it.

RatherBdigging.. You can just take a pic of the plant you are selling.. even if it's just a root division, it's best to be right up front.. I'd still buy a plant with a complete description and a pic of the actual plant.. (in fact, I have bought several that way!) I always look up a plant even if it does have a pic!

As a Plant Scout vendor, I can link my products to plants found in the plant files. Perhaps when you type in your description, it can give you the option of linking to a plant found in the Plant Files based on what you type in.

Both calculated and flat rate shipping would be ideal. Both have the ability to be higher than actual, and it will still be up to the shipper to charge a fair rate.

For the occaisional seller, calculaing each shipment is no big deal. For volume shippers, it adds a LOT more time, thus increasing expenses and ultimately prices.

Also, the ability to adjust shipping down, before invoicing would be nice. I don't think they should b adjustable up of course.

I also tried this and it worked really well for me except the "buy it now price" I entered $2.00 for the price for buy it now and it came up as $1.00. Auction started at .99. This was really easy to use.

WOW, all I can say is Wow! I finally decided I needed to try this out. It is Great! Even I was able to navigate the process with no problems. Others way smarter than me can point out bugs, I'm just amazed at the simplicity from my end. I have never sold or bought from an auction site but that will have to change with the ease of this new feature.

I will admit I was very leary of the proposal in the beginning, but I think you have a convert here!

Question...

If I were to do custom dyed tee shirts, how do I go about listing sizes offered. say I've got 3 small, 3 med, and 3 large. do I need to do 3 separate auctions or each size? The counter needs to be able to count down what's left.

This is just a 'playing around with idea' not really sure how to handle the shirts. I can do the silk scarves with botanical prints with no problem, it's just the sizes that are throwing me for a loop.

Dave how are people going to navigate the auction site? On your competitor items are listed by catergory ex: seedlings, new registrations etc. If I'm looking for mature hostas or daylily seeds would I have to scroll through everything being offered here?
Will the auction be open to buyers who are not DG subscribers?
In testing I ran into the same problems others have mentioned about the buy now price, edit, no back button etc. I assume those are being worked on.

Thanks!

Melody, i saw you wanting to make Tshirts.
I wish you could use 100% Haynes white Tshirts and make them for Dave's gardens.
I ordered a X large one on that site and the shirt isn't big enough for one of my grandchildren and it is made of that stuff in Vietnam ...bad product.

We need the good ole' cotton Tshirts with all sorts of things about Dave's Gardens on them...where XL means extra large.

So far, so good - like others have said, Edit does not work yet, also BIN price was $1.00 instead of $9.95. With Dave's expertise, I'm sure it will all be fixed in due time.

Thanks Dave
