I recently saw a show on digging Ginseng and read up on it. It seems the legal time to dig is 8/15-12/1 in KY. I would like to start scouting around in the spring to see if I have any on my land. It says you can only dig 3 prong plants and plant the seed at the time of picking - poking a hole with your finger in the ground...(it gets that descriptive!)
Does anyone know when the start sending up their leaves so you can tell you are going to have a 3 pronger? Maybe that is why we have to dig in the fall..because it will have berries and all of its foilage? I am guessing here and rambling...
I am still hunting on the internet on how to find a licensed dealer who could purchase it, but no luck. I don't think you could just take it up to the local whole foods type place and sell it.
I also am thinking of letting the roots I find remain in the ground for years to come...just to know they are out there is fine with me...I saw in the show that they found a 40 year old root and it brought them around $200.
this is prob not the right forum, but is anyone have any stories or info on it?
