| Here's my large melon basket. It's about 18" long from side to side. I made this last month. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| And here's the handle. It has #6 round reed on both sides, and I weaved them to the handle using 11/64 flat reed. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| It has many flaws, but it's sturdy and I learned a lot making this basket. We'll use it primary for harvesting lettuce each day. |

| Whoooohooooo! Dave, you are a man after my own heart. This retired art teacher is going to dig out my old dried out reeds and soak them in the bath tub overnight.
What a great idea!
Thanks, Dave. |

| Speaking of soaking, some of the reeds are porous enough that when we soaked them, we added dye to some of the water and had really nice color variations. The color is subdued, but still added interest. Of course that was at school.
Think I am off to the dollar store to pick up some plastic tubs and check out the Rit. |

| I have a yucca plant that i've tried to kill several times. I'm thinking the leaves would probably work for "primitive*" baskets.

| It's too dark now, but tomorrow is supposed to be warm and rainy (as opposed to sunny and frigid like today - you just have to love my county). Maybe if there's a break in the down pour, I'll go out and clip them.
Now, do you think I should let them dry, or shall I try them green and see what happens? At this point, I would think they would be quite woody to begin with, but there will be shrinkage, I'm sure. |

| Dave, I love this one too. I have never seen a basket with that diamond design at the side. Is that common to the melon basket or is it just a basket weaving technique? It's very cool. |

| I whacked the yucca this morning before church, right after I dug it out from under the snow. GADS! there are little yuccas under it! Will I never be rid of this??
I hosed it down and have it sitting in a bucket. I'll take it apart tomorrow and spread some to dry and maybe take a shot at weaving some of it green. There's more there than I expected. |

| elsie, the diamonds on the sides are referred to in my books as "God's Eyes" and seem to be pretty common to a few styles of baskets. They are very strong and excellent for connecting the rim to the handle loop. |

| PICTURES, PICTURES you all must send some photos of your creativity to encourage the rest of us. I've never tried weaving with reeds only pineneedles. I guess that will be added to my list of things to do. I hope I live long enough to complete all my ventures. I know nothing ventured nothing gained, but I just have to find someone to give me a little nudge now and then. Kinda like jump starting the ole battery. I have so much on my list I think that I may have to widdle it down just a bit. It is becoming a little overwhelming. You know what I mean? |

| WOW!!! That is absolutely gorgeous. I love the blue color contrast. That is really terrific. Was that a giant bushel gourd? Great use of color. What did you use around the edges? What kind of wrap did you use? Was it waxed linen or what. It almost looks like that plastic stuff we used to use to make key chains etc. I,m not belittling it by saying that as it just does such a great job in tying it altogether and it lays so nice and flat against the gourd. I may even consider trying that even if it isnt the plastic cording.

| I once got an ornament from a fellow in an RV camp made of crossed toothpicks and knitting thread. He called them "Ojos de Dia", or "Eyes of God", same diamond pattern. I have some gourds coming on, how do you process them to prevent spoiling? Gene |

| Curlers, that is amazing! I love it.
Does anyone have any online reference info for making baskets? I am totally clueless and fascinated at the same time. I don't know if it's something I could or would like to do but I think I would like to give it a try. |
