I learned this the hard way:

Round reed can be soaked indefinitely.

Flat reed, on the other hand, shouldn't be soaked for very long. If you soak it for more than 5 minutes, it actually starts fraying! So soak it for 3 to 5 minutes and then get them out of the water, otherwise you'll have a stringy mess to deal with.

Does the water temperature play a role? Am wondering if warm water works better than cool/cold, or would it cause the reed to fray faster?

Everything I've read says to soak in hot water. I did try cold water once and it seemed like it just never did get pliable enough.

doccat, looks like maybe a Va/NC Basket Weaving Roundup will one day be in order, eh?

(Amazon had quite a few used copies if you want to check them out.)

I was shopping on Amazon for one of those, shoe. :) I want to check the local library first and see if they have a copy or other similar books I could look at. Once I do that I'll go scrounge for materials. There 5 acres of wooded land right next door, I ought to be able find something. LOL

if you add a bit of cheap fabric softner to the water your reed will soften up faster and your hands wont dry out as much. Cool to warm water is best. If you are working with Dyed reed hot water often makes the dye to be released and the reed will fade a bit.
