I've been spending every spare minute on a little project. Since most of this renovation was done with leftovers from other projects, I decided this forum was the best place to post.

The new kitchen cabinet (previously just propped up by pink
2 x 4's )was from cedar leftovers on the greenhouse project and cut off scrap 2 X 4's scarfed from a friend curb trash when he moved.

Janet supplied the plywood for the built in boxes from the tear out of her kitchen cabinets.Tile a combination of Habitat store/Goodwill/Janet. Not all alike but patterned in to make work.

Drawer bottom is the cut out from the paneling taken from the wall for the boxes.

Fabric on the upholstered ceiling was left from my bedroom's upholstered walls.(still enough left for curtain for the french door and my niece's ottoman should she decide she'd like to)

Light fixture from Good Will(brand new still in the box) low profile...perfect since the ceilings space is low.

This room was built into the attic space after an addition. I gained 2 feet up there since the old part of the house has 10 foot ceilings. It's just a big room and a bathroom. Previously occupied by a man who was perfectly happy with it like it was. BUT when my niece decided she wanted to live up there...if it just had a kitchen...if only it wasn't blue...the carpet is gross...LOL SO I dived in and less than a month later...Ta da!! She moved in today.

The ceiling had old blue wall paper and horrible blue trim. The seams on the wall paper were curling so we painted it and used 3/8 inch cedar slices to cover those seams which also cover the staples in the fabric.

Over the kitchen is two sheets of bead board painted to be wipeoffable in the kitchen area.

Makeover was about 600 including the floor which was nearly 400.

I also rerouted some drain lines and water supply lines up there and replaced all the outlets and covers. Switch on the side of the kitchen cabinet for the florescent light (new) New electrical for outside motion detection security light (thrift store still in it's box) and new circuit for the microwave. Outlets and vents in the back of the built in boxes.

SO much space was wasted back in those walls I had to take advantage of it.

on the had to buy list:
Ball bearing slides for the drawer, convection oven and pull out cutting board/counter space that Janet donated (she found at Goodwill)
Hardy backer board, grout and thinset.
Paint, Conduit and outlets, PVC and screws . The 2 pieces of bead board and 20 cedar board for trim.

A couple of pics...

LOL I'm fixing to...Mom's in San Antonio at Easter needs some work on her house.
My boy friend got me a miter saw for Christmas, so I HAD to get some use out of it...;) he knows me well. Sure does make things go smoother.

I'd done the little bathroom a few years ago with cedar and it looked so cute in there compared to the rest of the room. I couldn't have done it with a renter there. I sure hated to loose him he was a perfect tenant but alas...he found a lady friend and moved in with her. I'll take some pics of the bathroom tomorrow. It was all done with a circular saw and I can see how my skills have improved since then. Still looks nice in there but that new saw is so precise and easy.

Connie, I watched this project from the day our niece came over and decided she wanted to live there. Your talents know no ends. You've taken a room that was "adequate" for a single person to live in, but not something you'd be proud to show your mama (or your girlfriend) and transformed it into an adorable place that our Mom could be happy to live in comfortably (if not for the steps!! Of course, she'd be downstairs for dinner each evening, letting you do the cooking. :-) )

You did neglect to mention that you have a business that you run from your house, in addition to working on this project. Connie, your energy level just floors me. By the way... Thanks for helping me to add to my "apprentice's resume" the experience of "holding up trim while you use the nail gun for the first time". Every time I spend time around you I learn something new. Thanks!

The feel of that room is so elegant and warm now. The trim work that you did makes the room seem rustic and like a home. The floor is absolutely lovely and should last for many years to come.

You need to get a photo of the apartment size refrigerator she bought to fit next to the cabinet. It's so cute and fits in there perfectly! That stainless really looks good with the cedar. So much better than that big honking fridge that was there before.

Folks may have noticed that there is no stove in the apartment. I know you told me the reason you didn't put one in there, but I can't remember why. There are plenty of ways to cook without a stove though. Just ask me. I had 2 years experience with that. HAHAHAHA I'm glad that the convection oven Mom got me for Christmas last year will get some use now. I didn't have it but a month before I got my new killer stove.

I hope our niece has more photos from before so you can post them also. That one photo does show the new kitchen, but I hope her photos show more of the rest of the place. The kitchen is the showiest part of the project (other than that gorgeous sparkling fabric).

Oh, and you need to take some photos from the outside as well. Especially when that Passion Vine is blooming over the deck. She's going to love that. We'll have to park the cedar butterfly house there on her deck. The Gulf Frits love your passion vine more than mine anyway. :-)

Excellent Job, as usual, Connie. I can't wait to post some links here. Ya done did good!

Janet

ps If I may make a suggestion without hurting your feelings... I know you were excited when you were posting this and I know I've been after you to post this project while it was in progress. I've been leaving hints about it here and there in the forums that I frequent. But Connie, the enter key works so well for posting easier to read messages. Please edit your post and make it easier on the eyeballs, so the good folks reading this will take the time to see everything that you've accomplished in about a month's time and be able to appreciate what all you've done singlehandedly. I know you've spent some money on this project, but Geez, "Line Space" is cheap around here. HAHAHA

pss I want to make sure I get copies of all of the photos so I can add your project to the Construction Zone slide shows I'm working on. I know you've emailed me some, but I don't think I have them all.

There. I edited it.
Thanks for looking Janet and all the compliments... I have lots of pics.

I just took some more of the fridge and bathroom

The reason it has no stove is because it would then be considered rental property and the house would not appraise for as much. That's what the appraiser told me anyway.

There was and will be a hot plate up there and it has an electric skillet (thanks Janet) and toaster too(Cammie had one), microwave, convection oven and fridge. Good enough for a single person which is all it's big enough for. I'd live up there. :)

If I were a single person, I'd be happy to live up there too. Especially now that the air and heat work so much better. I forgot all about the "closet" job you did.

I have a feeling she's going to talk you into refinishing that tree trunk table that you all hauled up those steps. It'll be, "Can you teach me how to do this?" HAHAHAHA I wanna be in on THAT project. I've always loved that table, but it sure was a knee knocker when it was in my house. I hope Cammie has knee pads. :-)

Thanks. Yes it does msrobin. It was cool seeing it come to life as each stage was done. So strange...as I worked on it, I thought I'd never get everything finished. The list of to do's just kept growing. Then nearing the end, I kept finding more unnecessary little things to do. Not wanting it to be over.
Cparts I appreciate the compliments. It was a scrimp job. But each thing I used seemed to work out to the inch perfectly. I just kept playing with what I had until it worked. Thanks for looking.

I hear ya Janet. No doubt she will. I need to get a picture of the table. It's a HUMONGOUS 5 inch cypress slice or slab. Bark and all. With a rooty kneeish looking base. From the 70's I'm sure when they were so popular.

Hi plantladylin! It sure does! I do plan on putting some of my plants up there on that deck since I'm running out of room everywhere else. Thanks for checking it out and your sweet words as usual. :)

First I used poly batting like they use for inside quilts. Split in half so it's not so thick. It gets spray adhesived up first. Then the fabric. I try to use as little fabric and skimp over doors and windows so I make my seams there. Lots of figuring and measuring but saves many yards of fabric. The fabric gets stapled up. I use little skinny pieces of cardboard strips like used to come in stocking. Poster board works. That keeps the fabric from ripping out of the staples but I have done it without using the cardboard too. It also helps keep down on the puckers the staples might make. But I use wood trim which smashes into the fabric and eliminates those. First time I saw this done was in a fancy restaurant and loved it. They'd used cording wrapped in the same fabric to trim theirs but that seemed like a lot of trouble to me. Made it look more like upholstery tho. I met and became friends with the lady who actually did that restaurant and she told me how it was done.
So if you cannot or don't want to remove existing trim around doors and windows the cording is an option.

Originally I did it because I have 10 foot ceilings and back when this house was being remodeled there was no 10 foot sheet rock. I wouldn't use it anyway now that it is available. I can and have redone the fabric in a room in an evening. Second time around it's easier without having to do the batting. It's already there. And I have also redone it over the old fabric in one room.

I reused this fabric in the closet because I loved it in the room it was in. I redid the room and salvaged the fabric. Reminds me of old timey wall paper.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! You are one talented lady!!

I love the way you used so many recycled things and found things at goodwill etc. Doesn't it make you feel good to have it turn out sooo great and ... you did it all so inexpensively?! I love doing things that way too. I think even if I was wealthy I would still shop at goodwill and thrift shops and try to recycle.

I've done similar things myself. I took someone's old dock boards and used it to frame a window in. And picked up a 2x4 on the side of the road. It's probably part of my house somewhere... LOL! I can't bare to throw any piece of wood away because I know how expensive lumber is and I know I'll use in eventually!

You did a great job, and have inspired us all... and I was careful not to run this together and hit the enter button once in awhile so Janet wouldn't yell at me! LOL!!!

Kathy,

Thank you so much. Connie and I really do have a wonderful time together. I couldn't have asked God to create a better sister than Connie has been. Always... and I do mean ALWAYS patient (with ME anyhow!) ... always willing to explain things that are way over my head ... Connie has an analytical AND an exceptionally creative) mind, whereas I have more of just a creative mind. Connie and I compliment each other very well.

She is a pure pleasure to shop with. When we go to the thrift stores, we head in different directions and meet maybe 4-5 times before we actually get to the register to pay. We usually get one buggy and I get to push it. (waybigo grin) We each look for things both of us like. If it's a possibility, it goes into the buggy. Possession is 10/10 of the law at Goodwills. You can always put it back if you decide NOT to get something. Connie is the "checkin'ist'out" person I've ever known. She eyeballs "things" and it's highly unusual for her NOT to know what to do with it... Regardless of it's age. If that IS the case, she is more than willing to do the research to find out for herself. Our Dad was like that too. We both carry "Boysenberries" (Blackberries) and have internet to go.

She and I can be companionably silent with each other and it not bother either one of us. We can be silly, and not be embarrassed. That in itself is a blessing to have such a great friend.

Each time we work on a project, we think about what it would be like to see this and not know anything about the "workings" of it. I love to take photos and try by best to remember to get images of what we are doing. There are many folks (myself included) that can read something and not necessarily be able to imagine it. It's fun for us, knowing folks can learn from our fun.

As far as our copper artwork, I like to make slide shows of each of our projects. This not only shows the person getting the sculpture, etc. what we have done, but reminds US when a similar obstacle shows up. We do refer back to the photos sometimes. Once the sculpture is shipped off, there's no going back to look closely at anything, without the photos, that is.

Kathy,

Thank you. I love him too. For some reason though, he's become like (excuse the expression) a tampon. (Outta sight, outta mind.) It's been a year since we've worked on him. I think about him sometimes and it's not the right time for one or the other of us at that moment. Connie's got 2 days a week that are "accounted for" by car dealers and the other days she has her usual customers.

Hubby and I have plans most weekends ... hunting ... This is the first year I've REALLY spent time in the woods with him (we've been married 30 years and he's hunted probably 25 of those years). That used to be the time Connie and I'd work on the sculptures... while he was gone for the weekend.

Maybe we could work on him during the week soon. Perhaps with my birthday around the corner, we'll get some time to work on him again.

There is quite a bit more to do on the dragon. The wings, the legs, and the tail. I have an idea of using glass leaves for the wings. Whether that will pan out or not is yet to be seen. The glass leaves were on a tree that was found at one of the thrift stores. It was supposed to represent a bonsai. I've already taken the tree apart and the leaves are waiting to be used. That is going to be very time consuming, putting them on something (a frame of some sort) and is more than likely one reason I haven't gotten back to him.

I really wish you all could see the apartment that this thread is about "in person". The photos are good, but seeing it in its entirety... well... It's adorable and just perfect for a single person. Everywhere you look you want to ooh and aah. Connie really outdid herself making it look good for our niece. She really used the space so efficiently.

Thanks Brenda!! Sure! We learn as we go. Pick brains of those who know how to do the intimidating things. I usually have already done a project in my mind before I even start. Several times. Worry about the what if's and have an alternate plan just in case. Things would go easier if I had the money to just go buy whatever I wanted or needed when I do something but it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying.
