Hey guys,
Hope everyone is doing well. I've been super busy trying to get back into the swing of things.
I just finished this painting of one of the Spanish Missions here. Oil on panel.
Let me know what you think. :)

Thanks. I'll try to take a better picture of it soon. I can't seem to get the colors to match up. I still have to figure out the white balance on my camera.

At first look I was thinking thats a photo not a painting! Your perspective is amazing and the colors are very true to life. Nice.

James, That is a beautiful painting and you have been busy since you quit your job. This is more fun, huh? I'm just curious as to why you use panels instead of prestretched canvas on wooden frames? Laverne

Thanks guys!
Laverne, personally I don't like the texture of canvas. I always feel like I am fighting to cover it. I'm not the type that loads a ton of paint on the brush, so the panels work better for me.
I was thinking about prepping a couple canvases by layering more gesso on them and sanding them down. Has anyone done that?

j,
stunning piece, thanks for sharing! what size is it?

I was interested in your last comment, because I have the same issues with canvas. I have read that additional layers of gesso does help, and I was going to try that on my next project. Have not heard about sanding, but that makes sense. Let us know how it works for you.

Hi Gk, it is 11X14, I was going to do it bigger, but realized I would spend weeks getting into tiny little details so I scaled it down. I'll let you know whenever I get around to sanding down some canvas. :)
Thanks haighr.

James, I think that the gesso and sanding would work well, but a lot of work. It would be really smooth, tho. Also some of the linen canvas are really smooth. Have you checked on the linen portrait canvas? The panels that I have used before had an overlay of canvas like material on it. You must be using something different than I did. Okay, get with it, we want to see more of your work. Laverne

James,

Having grown up in San Antonio, I remember seeing those missions. You've captured the beauty and inspiration of them perfectly. Keep up the awesome work. I really enjoy seeing your projects.

Thanks Laverne. I have looked at the linen canvas before. So far the only canvas I have seen that I really like is the watercolor canvas. It's really smooth. The panels are archival masonite, with a good coating of gesso on them. Not only do I like the texture better, but they are much easier to frame. Not all ready made frames really fit canvas that well.
I'll attach a pic of this one framed.

Thanks Janet. There is something very inspiring about them. It's amazing to see some of the oldest structures in the country still standing strong.

James,

Your painting is beautiful. Your composition is well executed. I like the way the tower & dome grab the eye & then the orange in the bush below pulls you down and back around in the painting. Very good.

Beautiful painting!

I use the thin Laun plywood cut to size. Coat with three coats of Gesso, sand. Then coat again and sand again. For a super smooth surface I will do a third layer. It makes a beautiful surface to paint on.
