| Thanks for the reminder, I knew there was something else I wanted to add to my plant these now! list. Good article and yummy subject! Fresh picked "wilted" lettuce! Oh boy, yummy! |

| Thanks to you, I have gotten inspired to plant lettuces this year! Just ordered seed from Johnny's Selected Seeds, after perusing Lois Tilton's list of new introductions. Could I use those wooden half wine-barrels for my leaf lettuce mix? After "filling" up the bottom with some recycled soda cans to reduce the amount of soil needed?

| i planted lettuce seeds and they have sprouted--they are all bunched together in a small area--you mentioned not being too concerned about spacing--can i let them go and not thin them out? i goofed and they are all in a 8 inch square--if i thin out i guess i'd only have one or two left! |

| CapeCod, so glad I could provide inspiration! Johnny's has some wonderful varieties to choose from. And yes, I think an old wine barrel would work very well.
Hey Linda! Good hearing from you again. You should probably thin them out a little, but rather than pulling out the sprouts (which can damage the roots of the ones you want to leave) just take a pair of scissors and snip off most of the plants right at the base. In an 8" square, you can probably get away with four heads, maybe one in each corner.
Happy lettuce-growing, all!
