It might burn, but perhaps in a shadier spot. I can't speak for American sources as I live in canada.

Per (zone 9)-
I'm in Austin (8b) and researched a bit on Acer Palmatums. Found a view different type that will work here. I purchased a graft AP "Katsura". This AP is doing reasonably well.
There is information on Daves Garden about it. Keep faith though, there are AP that we can grow in Central and SE Texas. Another is BloodGood (i believe).
A decent reference is this site:

Find the AP's that you like a check them to see if they'll work well in zone 9.
