I have been searching the web for a price on both LG Hi-Mac and Corian. And is there another brand out there that is comparable? Do any of you have that info? thank you.

The best place to look for prices is to go to some local places that sell/install countertops, they often have the prices posted, or at the very least they can tell you what the prices are if you ask. I'ts been a year since I went countertop shopping and Corian was never on the list of surfaces I was considering, but I want to say that prices can be anywhere from about $40 up to maybe $90-100 per square foot (installed) depending on which color you choose--all those types of solid surfaces have tiered pricing, some colors/patterns are cheaper than others. Hi Mac and Corian are exactly the same thing just different manufacturers. If you want to spend a little more, there's also quartz surfacing that looks more like granite than Corian does--some brands are Silestone, Cambria, Caesarstone, and there are a couple others I'm forgetting. Although on average the quartz is a little more expensive than Corian, there's a lot of overlap--I think the price range for quartz starts around $50 or so per square foot.

ecrane---What did you go with??? and do you like it now 1 year later? Or, maybe you backed out and still have your same old counter top. Because, maybe like me, you get so confused and price shocked that you go home and do nothing. Every year we wait though, it just goes up more. Three things I have wanted to update are the front door, new windows in three rooms and counter tops. I have done them all now Except the counter tops. I have been looking into Silestone, but would really like input from DG members about this produce. Thanks...

I decided to go with granite--I really liked it better all along but I wasn't sure if I wanted the maintenance (sealing, etc) that goes along with it so I looked at quartz, but I decided the sealing wouldn't really be that big of a deal so I got what I really wanted in the first place.

The only other thing I considered was quartz surfacing, but I really didn't look at Silestone because the other brands out there looked a lot more like granite in my opinion. I think Cambria was the brand I was going to go with if I did the quartz, but I really can't remember. It was strictly based on what color I liked best, I think the overall qualities of the countertop are similar regardless of brand.

Are you happy you went with the granite, ecrane? We're thinking about re-doing our kitchen soon. The sealing is once a year?

I think you're supposed to do it every 6 months? I'm not sure. I don't do a lot of cooking so I'm going with once a year, but if you've got a lot of action in your kitchen you might want to do it more often. Frequent sealing is especially important if it's light colored granite because that'll show stains more. Mine's got enough patterning in it that even if it did stain I don't know if I'd notice! The only down side is if you drop a glass on it, it'll break, and with the solid surface counters things might survive the fall. But my old counters were tile, so it's not really a change from what I had before.
