We are looking to match up our vinyl simi privacy fence with either vinyl farm post and rail with wire mess inbetween or vinyl picket fencing. the guy who installs the fence told us that the 3 post farm fencing in vinyl is cheaper but the wire mess in time rust's or starts to look ugly. They can not get it as flush to the post and rail like a wooden post and rail. He said the vinyl stays white looking and the wire stands out and does not look as nice in time. Wooden fences fade so the wire mess does not look as bad on them as they fade together.. He says the picket would be more money but looks wise would hold up better in the long run. does anyone have any idea if this is true about the new 3 post and rail vinyl farm fence with the wire mess??

I don't know for certain, but it sounds very likely to me.

Can I ask why you want the wire mesh, however? Because there might be other options. If you are trying to keep in dogs/kids/etc, have you considered vinyl lattice? You could stand that between vinyl posts & they should both stay white for years (decades?). (Have to talk with your fence guy for methods of attaching it - I'm reasonably sure they could work out something). If your aim is for smaller dogs, then maybe only put the lattice under the lowest rail of the fence..

Another option might be a nylon/plastic mesh ( like here: [HYPERLINK@www.industrialnetting.com] ). It's also can be white (or clear) if you order it that way, will not fade, and can contain animals/kids. I haven't priced it, however, so it may be too expensive to consider.

I'm a big fan of wooden fences and he's right - the wood & wire will continue to look reasonably good until they practically rot where they stand...but they WILL rot eventually whereas vinyl won't.

The vinyl pickets may be your best value in the long run, but I'd explore those other options first if you'd really prefer the post-and-rail.

Here is our backyard now with old post and rail that we would to replace. we are looking at picket fencing also. Not sure if a white swoop(scallop) picket would look nicer or a straight picket. I liked the white post and rail as it is cheaper then the picket but really thinking maybe the picket is a better option now. Scallop picket or straight?? The picket says 46" height is that from the top of the post or the top of the first rail on the picket?? The scallop picket swoops down in the middle so how much lower then 46" is it?? Not sure the best option way to go.
