If dirt is so dirty, how do earthworms survive in it? The answer by a team of Russian researchers could be a boon to scientists developing chemical compounds to fight germs and infections.

According to Boris A.Byzov the lead researcher from the Moscow Lomonosov State University’s faculty of soil science found that killing activities in the earthworm’s gut fluid against selected strains of soil bacteria and fungi that can be helpful in checking how human pathogenic microorganisms would respond to these activities. He has also found some anti-tumour, insulin-like wound healing compounds have been found in earthworm excrement. His team dug up worms in cow manure-rich soils at that University and measured the amount of bacteria and fungi in both soil and fresh excrement of worms. The team also found that worm excreta contained a different microorganism mixture, with slightly less fungi.
