Wadda ya mean I use much more basic and primitive methods? LOL I do it all the time...LOL That's being practical!!! LOL I'm still dancing with the idea of a solar powered GH. Wonderful article and lots of good practical knowledge!! Thanks for sharing.

You want primitive? Dig a pit the same size as your cold frame about 16 to18"s deep the same dimensions as the cold frame and fill the first 12 to 14"s with a mixture of chopped straw and fresh manure (composted will not work) then top off with soil. The manure/straw combo will decompose and heat the soil above it. You can plant directly in the soil or set your potted plants on top. This is a great way to get a jump on the season or extend it well into the fall. When the manure/straw finishes composting just till it into the earth for nice rich garden soil.
