This is something that I have traditionally stayed away from. I prefer annuals in the 18" - 24" range. I did have some that were pushing 30" last year, but that was because I didn't know they would grow that tall. Now, I am actually considering growing quite a few taller annuals. My worry has always been will they stand upright on their own or will I have to stake them?
I decided that I am going to redo and enlarge my island in the front yard. The new center is going to be several canna that should grow to 4 - 4 1/2 feet. With these larger plants, and some other taller perennials that I am moving into the area, I think that I can finally use the 4 feet cosmo seeds that I have had for a couple of years. I'm also going to put in some tithonia in case it really does grow taller it is supposed to (should only be 2 1/2 feet, but I've heard stories of up to 6 feet!)
Since I will have taller perennials, I am hoping that nothing needs to be staked. Are there any other taller annuals that I should consider that like full sun and a good amount of water? Please let me know if they need to be staked.
