Why breed irises? Because it is fun, that's why! You don't have to sell a plant to make an improvement, there really isn't money in it unless you are a large establishment or can come up with something really different. For example:TB 'Vanity' has been a favorite in region1 (New England) for yrs. It is a mighty grower, but foliage can be a detracting trait. So TB people here wish to work on a good pink flower, with good foliage which can grow like 'Vanity' does. It is more difficult than it appears. Also orange TBs seem not to be hardy here. That is also being worked on--plant by plant to improve the hardiness. So does your area have a need? Find it and go to work--mistakes make good compost and spring is like Christmas.
