I am trying to figure out how man recessed lights I need for a new room in our home. It will be approximately 16' x 16' and there will be a 52" ceiling fan in the center. I want to use the lights for general lighting and would like enough for a person to read comfortably whereever they are in the room. One lighting consultant said 4 lights would be enough and another said I needed 8.

I am also curious to know if the flourescent bulbs can be used with dimmer switches?????

Thanks.

Depending on the wattage of the compact fluorescents you could easily get away with four, however locally under each fixture the lighting may seem very harsh. I don’t know why your choices are 4 or 8 and not 6….? Anyway the new CF bulbs that are available these days can be dimmable (http://www.1000bulbs.com/Dimmable-Compact-Fluorescent-Bulbs/ ) . If you’re going through the expense of adding the fixtures why not have the extra light available at the touch of either a second circuit or just on the dimmable circuit?

Thanks, that helps a lot. I guess the salesman who said 4 was counting on more wattage per bulb - but that is just a guess.
Everything is still open and I can put in as many as I want.

I was also told that the recessed lights have to be 4 feet from the ceiling fan; do you know if that is the center housing or the edge of the blades?
