Although it's not as ornamental as some of the varieties above, my very favorite culinary variety is an Italian Basil that a friend of mine brought back from Italy several years ago. Its tall form and crinkled green leaves mix well with other plants in a landscape bed, but be sure to plant some close to the kitchen, too.

Since this is just a single packet of seed, I'm going to send it out in a regular envelope rather than a BE and cross my fingers. Thanks to a recent contribution to the postage kitty from a DGer in the herb forum, I've got some extra stamps! So no postage is required for this offer.

This offer is for the first 10 people to respond on this thread (US members only, please). If you've already responded to one of my basil seed offers, please let somebody else have these seeds.

All you have to do is post on this thread to tell me you'd like to try this basil, then Dmail me with your address.

I will mail you a packet of Italian Basil seed.

:-)

Boleslaus, welcome to DG! I'll be happy to send you some Italian basil. :-)

Whoops, I started typing instructions on sending Dmail, then noticed you'd already sent me a note. I'll have your seeds out in Monday's mail!

Depending on what happened with your "belly up" seeds, you might be interested in the "Seed Starting 101" articles I've written, or in my article on preventing "The Dreaded Damping-Off." Good luck!

Critter,
Thanks. I'll eview the seed starting article. I think my starting mix may have been too heavy. They didn't sprout and never got the chance to damp off.
Also, do you plant by lunar cycles? I started my first tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc during a waning moon and none of them did much. Two weeks later, near the full moon my starts are almost surpassing the earlier ones. Curious.

I may have to start paying more attention to the moon... you're not the first person to report results like that! Did you know DG now has a "Gardening by the Moon" forum? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/lunarmania/all/

Hi Jill,

Could I get some seeds as well? I already have some forms of Basil now and that variety would be a great addition to the "Kitchen Garden" my husband build right outside the window. I love to see what everybody here does in their gardens, and I sure appreciate your offer. I am also anxious to see how things grow at our new Texas home. We last lived aboard a large boat in Mexico, and finally sold it when my husbands disability became too serious to continue. We were live aboard sailors for almost 30 years. Nifty, huh? I sure thought so...

Oh, what is this Dmail thing? I have never heard of that.

Hi Critter,

I just looked at the posting and I was trying to talk to my friend Jill on the phone and write to you at the same time. I see I got her name in the header instead of yours. I wonder if I said By By Critter to Jill before we hung up...

Sorry. Evidently I'm not so good at multitasking...

Please do tell me how to Dmail so I can get some of those seeds.

I answer to either "Critter" or "Jill"

:-)

However, you found an article from last year. Since I didn't manage to save seeds from this basil last year, my remaining seeds from 2007 went pretty quickly...

I am growing this Italian basil again this year, and hopefully the weather & my gardening schedule will cooperate so I can save plenty of seed to share for next year.

Your 30 years of boat living sound amazing! I hope you're enjoying Texas.

I hope you'll consider subscribing to DG... there are a number of discussion forums that I think would be to your liking (cottage gardening, herbs, Texas regional forum).

Dmail is like a DG version of email. To send somebody a Dmail, go to their memberpage (under the "communities" tab, you can search for somebody on the member list, or you can get there by clicking on their name next to their post... for example, you can click on "critterologist" to the left of this post to go to my member page). Near the top of the page, you'll find an option to send Dmail. :-)
