Superb article! Alas, my zone 8 prevents me from much more than daydreaming about most of the plants, but it probably makes me want them even more. Some of the conifers pictured appear to be naturally growing out of the rocks. Very cool!
I am in the Western North Carolina mountains--Zone 6b-7a. Thank you for this very informative article. I am currently planning and just beginning to implement evergreen plantings, both needled and broadleaf, in place of a huge old, but sick, sugar maple tree that had to come down. I've done a lot of research and made possible site maps, but am proceeding cautiously. Your article is very helpful, and has greatly increased my "wish list" of dwarf conifers. I am also one of the legion of anti-ivy warriors; former owners planted it and I have battled it for 10 years. I recently hired some cheap but strong help to pull and dig it out to make room for more evergreens. We have kudzu here, too, but thankfully none near my property. We even have a couple of "rent-a-goat" services available to eradicate it. I'm off to a wonderful nursery (Frye's) now with my wish list in hand. Thank you again.
