I just got off the phone with the Sony service department and it looks like my baby is dead...well maybe not dead put it is going to cost more to fix it than it is worth. My husband just wants to get new camera. Any ideas for a comperable camera? I have gotten spoiled by this camera and need one that is as good or better in the $200 -$600 price range.

Thanks.

I think one of the ten pins used for reading the memory stick is either bent or broken. There is no on-board memory so if it can't read the card it won't work. I've talked to Sony and they won't even look at it until I pay them $250. If the repair is more than that, I may as well get a new camera. Though I know it is not a problem with the memory sticks, they don't make this kind of memory sticks anymore anyway. Designed obsolesence at work. From what I've read, 5 years is a pretty good run for a digital camera now days. I just don't want to be disappointed with what I buy to replace it with.

Ah OK, thought you had the "famous" CCD sensor issue.
BTW the Sony Memory sticks are still available just the smaller capacity ones don't exist anymore.

before you trash it, be sure and email this guy, he specializes in fixing Sonys.

I don't have his email address, but here is a post he posted, Tim D. is his name. Can't hurt to consult him!

Lots of info from Sony users on this site and they love the 717, cause they use it for IR photography.

Well, I went ahead and sent my camera in for service at Sony. It is supposed to be back tomorrow. I feel like a kid again..on Christmas Eve, waiting for Santa! I'm sooo excited!

I thought it was a broken or bent pin in the card reader but this looks like a chip of some kind as well as some flex.

It's working like a dream now.

That looks like the image sensor board to me. They gave you a new CCD sensor.

That's weird, because they just replaced it for free less than 6 months ago. This fix cost me $230.

Let's hope it doesn't go again. The 717 is a nice camera!
