I want to make kitty perches in some of my window. I want to avoid nailing or screwing anything into the wall below the window. I came up with an idea of inserting two metal rods in the bottom of the window frame then attaching the rods to the table top underneath and finally securing it to the window so it wouldn't come out.
I figure I will only be able to drill a hole no more than 3 inches deep. The kitties combined weigh about 25lbs. If you factor in jumping on to from the floor and the weight of the table top that it would add another 10 pounds.
The question is, what kind of metal rod is strong enough for this without bending and how thick would it have to be?
Thanks!

If you can center the holes in the studs under the window, through the trim board (or remove it), galvanized pipe would work.
It would have a constant diameter unlike rebar, and it is fairly easy to cut with a hacksaw. If you have power tools it would be even easier.
But you will weaken the support for the window.
If you do not use the studs to support the shelf, remember, the wall is hollow except for the insulation, electric wires, and perhaps plumbing pipes.
Personally, I would get a couple of 12" shelf brackets, and attach with molly's. Would have a lot less to patch when removing it. |
