Hey guys,
I would love to get some opinions here. I have been asked to do a portrait and am trying to decide which of these photos to use.
What do you think?

I definately prefer the second one, in which she is smiling. We need more happy people (and portraits).

The second one, she looks worried in the first one. Looking forward to seeing your painting.

See I agree with you guys. The second one looks happier and more like her as we know her. Unfortunately, the first one is the one she (and her mother) chose. They are wanting a more formal traditional portrait. I was thinking I could get her to change her mind, but so far it hasn't worked. lol.
On the other hand, traditionally portrait painters don't show teeth, because it is a dead give-away the artist used a photo and didn't paint from life. Personally, I don't really mind that, but in the portrait world it's a no no.

Do they only have the two phhotos? Maybe you could take some shots with your digital camera and get one where she looks happier.

I like the one where she is smiling, too. Oh, well.

Ok, the voice of dissent here, I like the more pensive photo better - think Mona Lisa. There is a whole lot more in that photo than the smiling one.

Can you do the first one but change the eyes to be like the second so that she looks less frightened? Unless of course that fearfull look is what she wants... an omen of the future?

Hey guys. I talked to her again and she is still certain that she wants the first one. I am going to change a couple of things about it though, especially the lighting.
Zany, that's too funny, I don't really see fear in the picture, just not as much happiness as in the second. She has been with her fiance for years now, so I don't think it's an omen. lol.
I think once it's is translated into paint it will look much better. Now I just have to decide how I want to do the background...

Here's my 2 cents worth--I like the first photo for a portrait. More elegant and portrait like. She certainly is a pretty girl and will be fun to paint. Laverne

Thanks Laverne. She is my sister-n-law, so I really want to get this one right. She asked me to do the portrait for her and I told her I would as her wedding present.

That is a great one of a kind wedding present--no chance she'll ever forget where that present came from.

Hi Jim
She is beautiful.
Perhaps she and her mom are responding to the first photo because intuitively they know that the first photo is more traditional for a portrait -- not smiling/no teeth, etc. Would either lady object to you changing the eyes a tad to a more 'looking forward' or gaze as opposed to this slightly sad 'looking backward' look that she has now? Her arm and the overall pose/lines of her neck/bustline are much nicer in the first photo. Her hair is perfect and her eyes are lighter and the lighting in the photo is better. It may be these things plus the reluctance to be smiling as she is in the second that is driving the choice. For sure, the second has a fun/personality spark that connects that the first does not. Her eyes are beautiful. Also, could you do both on one canvas? Or, is that totally out of the question? It would be a nice composition if the first photo could be more dominant/central and perhaps more 'misty' while the second photo smaller and more distinct to capture those eyes!

I agree with missingrosie comments, especially the comments on the eyes.
The first photo is a very traditional pose, which is what you expect in a standard portrait.
I myself like the unexpected, and would prefer something that captures a bit of the sitters personality and youth.
Looks like you have your work cut out for you! Good luck.

After reading over my last comment - I realize that it doesn't make sense but I can remember portraits that we had made as a kid (first holy communion) where several photos were placed and some seemed more transparent than others (I do realize you have to DRAW this)(magician!) and it all looked great. I think the first photo lends itself to that 'less than present' (don't want to say 'ghost') effect because to me the two photos seem to reflect a gal with one foot in the past (single, youth, fun, no responsibilty - nothing unknown) and one foot in the present. I realize of course both are her bride photos - but the first 'gal' seems sort of sad or wistful and the second 'gal' says 'Whoo Hoo!!! Bring it On! and seems totally ready to get on with the next adventure! it would be a shame to lose either one.

I think just lift the corners of her lips a tad & the first look will be fantastic.

PLEASE show us pix as you go, OK?

To me she looks sad and lost in the first one. The second one she lights up the room.
