I want to plant two small bushes on either side of our front steps going up to a front porch of an old house. I want something that doesn't lose it's leaves and is hardy, (hard to kill :) I want something dense with dark green leaves. It doesn't have to flower, but that would be nice, too. I want something I can keep small -- no taller and no bigger in diameter than about two feet. Can anybody give me some ideas? I'm new at this. Oh, and I live in upstate NY. Thank you very much.
I'd suggest a dwarf boxwood--it's evergreen and should be able to be pruned to keep it at 2 ft. There are also some dwarf Junipers and Chamaecyparis which might work for you too.
There are dwarf indian hawthorne - granted they get about 3-4 ft - but you can keep them small. - Just make sure you trim ONLY after it blooms or you will cut of next year's buds.
