Gourd, you are the Treasure bomb!

I am NOT buying a kiln and doing slump glass, but you've got me hooked on a bb. Thought I'd knock this crafty project off in a few hours, but I've had two multi-hour sessions and it's only half done. Think I'm just going to have to remain the laggard of the Trash to Treasure forum.

Gourd, that was a super idea . Now tell me what to do with a hugh broken cement urn. Very nice but also very heavy. Base broke off and didn't break off straight.

Hi faye,

You know, you could bury the broken part and fill the urn either with water for the birds, or, drill holes and plant in it just burying it sideways a little tilt... post a pic.. I'll bet we can come up with something.. There is a saw that you can use also to cut off the broken part and make it straighter for other purposes.. you could then turn it upside down and use it as a plant stand or gazing ball stand with some modifications.

I've been grouting a bowling ball, I'll take a photo later ..

Laurel, have you made your BB.. where are you??

Hi Gourd. Can't believe you caught up with me. In for a lunch break up here in N. GA. I post on orchids and N.E. (I know...directionally challenged). Posted the bb on another thread here a few days ago. I'll repost.

A 70' red oak fell on Maypop, our house up here. We have roof damage and our solid stone fireplace is a mess. There is additional damage from the crane truck and other heavy equipment needed to get the tree of the roof as the house vaults over the side of a hill. I posted elsewhere that we were having very heavy winds that Mother's Day night and I though my beloved bb had rolled off it's stump (big bang noise) and then down the stone steps (thump, thump). In actuality, it was the tree hitting the roof and then bouncing a couple times from the impact. No water damage and the interior decked ceilings and rafters appear fine. It'll be a while as the adjuster is now calling me Mrs. instead of Laurel :>).

Here's another. Oh, BTW, I've been a bit busy and have not grouted yet. It's leftover mosaic tile, a wine bottle and glass globs. I said in the other thread that I thought curved hemostats were very helpful in handling the smaller tile and glass shards.

Oh that is beautiful.. I may just try to copy that one..

Sorry to hear about the damages... sheesh, the wind here is something else too, we just lost our Tent that was up protecting my plants..lol.. it bent the frame completely and is unusable.. nothing compared to what you are going thru though... I hope the best for you and a speedy repair of all the damages...

I've just made my first two bbs and I'm going to try to find more bowling balls somewhere!

There were torrandos in Perris, Ca. too, glad it was far enough away from me. Weather strange all over.

Love the bowling ball, just asked sister-in-law to be on the look out for pretty wine bottles that I can break up. Members of Elk's lodge and I'm sure they would love to get rid of some of their empties. No Kiln for me either, have enough to keep me busy.

Glad you are okay Pegi. The weather sure is strange. I grew up on Miami Beach and never thought I'd live to see a hurricane in the N. Georgia mountains. That was on the heels of a tornado a few years ago. Lots of trees down on our seventeen acres (fifteen in mostly hardwood trees). We are still cleaning up from that. We try to stay positive. Lot's of wood to burn in our fireplace (if the insurance company coughs up $33,000 to replace it). We have a wood stove in the basement and the flu also runs up that chimney.

Thanks for the bb love. To be specific here...
It's constructed of Lowes black, seafoam green and blue tile, Trader Joe's green wine from Portugal (very green glass; fun, cheap and light in CA/NM weather) and glass globs from the dollar store. The wine was more fun to drink in San Sabastian, Spain, but I had to compromise for "the cause"; not that I wanted to mind you :). The tile will work up against the globs and the broken glass will work against the globs, but the tile will not work against the glass as it is too thick. This creates some patterning challenges, but I liked the textural effect. If this is confusing, DMail. I am so excited about doing the next one.

We put in lots of veggies in a small space and grow for us and special causes such as food pantries and charities. I am buried in "must be done now" chores. Creative stuff will have to wait until the weather says I can have a day off.

Laurel I'm so sorry6 for the damage to your home. I am thankful that you were not hurt. I love your bb and would love to see it up close to see the different dimensions of tile , glass, and globs.

Thank you Gourd, Your ideas sound better than repairing the urn. It was bro0ken when I got it (more trash) and I'm really going to try to do something with it.

Dahtzu, I'd also consider upending it with the pedestal on top for some form of yard art (bb?). If you can knock out a bit of the lip opening you'll have a great toad house. Post photos for more weird ideas.

So, speaking of yard art. we finally got our entry gate done at Maypop. A Carolina black capped chickadee moved in post haste to the house on the left and an anole is running in and out of the house on the right. What's with that? Do they live in bird houses? It's acting like it has taken up residence. Very territorial.

We have a design and build company. I design...he builds. He often doesn't get it and moans and groans about me being crazy. Then says "Wow!" It's worked for thirty seven years. What can I say? Don't want to make it sound like I point and shoot. I do plenty of the construction and finishing myself.

We started the gate last Spring after our bad weather and downed trees. The dead growth on top was cardinal flowers that went berserk. I said, "Let's do something with all those branches you're piling up instead of making piles." The result is that we ringed our entire veggie garden, made arches, did stick edging for flower borders to keep dogs out, and had plenty of pepper and eggplant stakes.. We're all about turning trees from Trash to Treasure here! The way the weather's been, well it seems like we have an endless supply. I'll post photos of the veggie garden fences and arches if you're interested.

Oh Faye, that can be fixed! drill a hole if it doesn't already have one in the bowl, put a 1 ft. rebar thru both holes and you can fill with cement... also, you may want to drill another hole for another rebar for strength, then one for drainage..

My god, that is beautifull... wow.. are you going to mosiac on it? I bet you could do something in glass..

I thought it was beyond repair, but it is not.. I'd keep it.. ITs a KEEPER.. Let me think some more about how to fix it... the above was the first thing that popped into my mind.

I agree with Gourd on the repair potential. If that's not up your alley, I'd consider sinking the urn part way, waterproofing the inside and turning it into a bog garden in miniature with a gravel bottom, peat, water and mini bog plants. RUK on Orchids Forum is doing one with a tub. It's under my thread on "What's in Your Garden". The base is a whole other story with lots of options.

Thanks Ladies, and Gourd you know I haven't a clue what rebar is . LOL I think hubby might know but I sure don't. Thinking it must be some type of rod. It does have a hole through it. I hadn't thought of what to do with it , it was broke when I got it (free) so was only concerned with fixing the thing. It's so heavy, almost impossible for me to move. (well, I have to grunt and strain all my parts to move it.
