I'm looking for a trellis for annual vines, such as moonflowers and morning glories (planted together) to go up the side of my house, at least 8 feet. Any suggestions and sources? Thanks.

Hi there,

check out http://www.simplyarbors.com/trellises. I just looked too because I planted a climbing hydrangea in my from yard but I don't want it to climb on my vinyl siding. Hope this helps!

Thanks...good suggestion. I have looked there and have just found one I like at plow and hearth. I think their website is http://www.plowandhearth.com I'm hoping to try it with some vines until my climbing roses are big enough to grow up the trellis.

When I needed a way to add more plants to my tiny garden I started looking at trellises. I found them all really boring - the same old same old - so I thought 'outside the box' and cruised ebay for ideas.

I love old wrought iron and discovered a treasure trove of it in the architecture section of ebay. Not many people have this quirky passion for wrought iron so I was able to win auctions easily at rediculously low prices. shipping such heavy items can be costly so I limited my search options to within 50 miles of my home so I could pick up.

I hung art deco bannister posts on my fences, created teepees by propping two similar pieces against each other, etc.

P.S. I now have a puppy who is a relentless digger so I used some of my grate-like pieces to deter her. Simply by laying the grate (or any of the other pieces laid around a plant) on the ground in early spring, my bulbs and perennials grew through the openings and my pup was unable to get at them.

These trellises have lasted for years and haven't suffered from snowy winters.

Do you have photos that you can share? I am looking for a iron gate for the deck and did not think of buying one on ebay.

I am also looking for some arbors or trellis ideas. When they put in the deck we got some of the left over wood. I am looking for some ideas for an stand alone trellis for a clematis vine.

I have obelisks in my garden and love them.

Here is the link to the ones I bought. I will also post a pic of mine.

Here is a picture of some trellises that Ric made. We picked up some inexpensive metal trellises. He boxed them out with wood edging which made them taller and stronger and then added a touch of stained glass. Also on the wood post you can see the trellis that he added to it. Just vertical strips of wood mounted on a couple of cross pieces and screwed to the post. This bed is for my Clematis

In this view you can see (just barely) the trellises on the house. We took the same inexpensive trellises, just a different pattern and cut off the ground stakes. Then mounted them directly onto the wall on either side of the window boxes. Much like window shutters. We left a gap behind them for the morning glories (which are planted in the window boxes) to twine through. We will add some stained glass to these as well later.

Thank you so much, The Blue Egg is a water feature, it is a bubbler. Those rocks laying around in the yard to the right are part of a new stone wall that is being worked on. Here are the window trellises at work, this is the first year trying them so we will see how they look. Last year I tried growing the MG in these boxes but didn't have trellises, just hung some cotton twine over the window.

We did something similar with the fence line we put up for our MG. We installed metal fence posts with fenceing on it and moved them around for a couple of years until we decided where they worked for us and then put in wooden posts with metal fencing. The intent was to find a place that sheilded the patio from the our neighbor's view. The fence is planted with Grandpa Otto's, Heavenly Blue, and Moonfloowers. This year we added somthing called celestial mix from Burpee's. IT has a really cool looking white MG with a lavendar star on it.

Here's a photo of the fence this year

Here's photo of it last year when the moonflowers were in bloom. The MGs got a little bigger than we thought they would last year.

The yard has it's moments. The moonflowers open in the evening about the time the other MG close. So we have blooms either open or in the process of opening or closeing all day. The spinx moths really like the moon flowers. The pot has a mandeville vine in it. This is the first year we've tried one and it has been doing really well. Seems to like hot weather and lots of sun.

Yes the gardenia would smell good. THe neighbors that just moved hard one at their front door. We could smell it all the way into our yard. It was very nice.

If you want to build one, we did one out of rebar and wood. I will put a picture. But we put Wisteria on it. I love it, but messy when winter comes and it dies out. I would do Lady Banks Roses which are evergreen if I did it again. But it is beautiful in summer as you can see, and this is only two vines in a couple years.

Here is a new view of mine just coming in, Wisteria and little net lights for summer. Morning glories also grow up this and take over. Again this is made with rebar crossed each way and then tied with wire and wood to support it. The little green tiny plants coming up in rock are the morning glories coming.

Curves, this is exactly the sort of thing I have been looking for!!! More pictures, please! Is this Trellis on a curve or is that a trick of the camera? I want an overhead arbor and an open support for vines or espaliered trees and this is it. Curvy is better, but if straight line that would work too. I will have to hire somebody though, this is beyond my talents. BRAVO!!

Hey, knownasnancy, I'm in portland, also, and would love to know if you find someone to build your trellis/arbor. I keep thinking, gee, if I could only get my husband interested, we could surely build one, but I don't think that's gonna happen!

Well girls it's not cheap, at first hubby said only $300, but I think in the end he spent about $700. Lumber isn't cheap, especially beams. Hope you can get it figured out.

Gorgeous. So, is it actually curved or are those upper boards straight? Dirtynails, i don't have anybody now but will get back to you if I find someone.

At the moment I am doing loads of prep work. The neighbors cut down my entire borrowed leafy canopy so I am madly moving shade plants and redesigning the whole area. Curvesarein Arbor is absolutely perfect for my situation.

Beautiful arbor..I would have never thought of using rebars but that was a smart idea because Wisteria is a very strong vine and the same way with a trumpet vine. How far is that wisteria from your house? They tell you not to plant a wisteria or trumpet vine near the foundation of your house .also keep it away from any plumbing. I've heard it seeks out water pipes, etc. "Curiosity killed the cat!" Next to the trellis/arbor with the wisteria..do you have a wall that you have painted a mural? That's what it looks like from the photo. Thanks for sharing with us. Beautiful!

The wisteria is across the patio about 15-20 feet from the house, it would have to cross concrete to get near it. So Far so problem. But I know what you mean. We have an elm that was only a foot high that hit 40 feet probably and we had to take it out, still have to remove the stump. It tore up our patio and came up all over the yard.
Yes I do have a mural I painted in 2003, I will send a picture.

Walpolewoodworkers.com has some really nice trellis. I've got my eye on a metal obelisk at Plow & Hearth for a new clematis vine for my backyard flowerbed. Just had a lilac bush/tree cut down and dug up because of lilac borer so double knockout rose will replace that in that bed. The Azaleas in that bed don't seem to be doing well either. They have lacewing or whatever it is called so they need some TLC. Walpole is a bit pricey but I bet they are quality worth paying for. It's the shipping cost that get you if you can't find what you want locally.
