am tyring to hook up a light fixture it holds one blub I wiring the fixture to a 10 foot wire and putting a plug on the end the problem is every time I plug it in the plug in shots sparks and I see a little blue streak I have change ends on the cord change fixtures still get the problem the light will burn good once plug in but when you turn it off or un plug it you get theses sparks and blue streaks I have tryed rewiring and everything I am pluging it into a standard wall outlet whats the trouble how dangerous is this is it a bad cord it looks fine. the cord has no black or white wire it has to wires inside with the insulation seperateing them its basicly 2 copper wires inside insulation no black or white colored wires just 2 wires thats not color code so I am gussing its okay to use ether one as postive side and negitative side why would these no be colored black or white the cord its self is white

I answered your other thread from a couple of days ago so I'll tell you the same thing here...first thing I would do is try plugging in something else into that outlet. If it sparks too then the problem is with the outlet, but if it doesn't then the problem is with your cord. Before you can figure out how to fix it you need to know where the problem is.

ecrane3 is right - try something else in that outlet. You might want to check the outlet power output with a volt/ohm meter, too

Is there a switch in the cord?
Are there any breaks in the cord?

The fact that you cannot tell the hot from the neutral, is probably not a problem with a light bulb, but would be with equipment that requires polarized power.

I try to replace plugs with polarized plugs, and use a volt/ohm meter to check continuity of each wire to get it right.

I have seen his problem with aluminum wiring. After a time the wires to the outlet loses firm contact. My neighbors had a hole burned in their wall from this.
