This is a great article. We drink a lot of ginger tea around here. My DH just brought home a 30lb csae of ginger root!!! Guess what else I will be making. : } Homemade ginger beer sounds really refreshing. Thanks!
What a fascinating and interesting read! Thanks, Ian, for enriching me with this knowledge. I was thrown for a minute by "ginger beer plant", wondering which species of ginger it referred to, until I realized it is what I would call the "ginger beer culture".
My DH, who claims to have had a pet dinosaur, says when he was young, Pepsi was the industry leader. Not until their fateful exclusivity contract with MacDonalds did Coke become synonymous with "non-alcoholic beverage" in the US. xx, Carrie
Thanx all for the comments. Yeah the ginger beer plant is a plant in the microbiological sense. It looks like a gelatinous mass at the bottom of the jar, once it settles. It starts as just a teaspoon & grows as you add more ginger & it feeds on the sugar. You can store the plant in the fridge for weeks if you wind up with too much beer & only feed it once a week or so.
I hope you enjoy making & drinking it Kimarj. Pls beware the exploding bottle factor of course.
Carrie, my grandmother had an aboriginal boyfriend who used to tell me he hunted dinosaurs. As a kid, I totally believed him & realised years later how niave I once was. I wonder if he knows your DH.
Probably - but this was a pet, you understand. Still, counting on their fingers and toes, using stone tablets to carve their homework, and so forth, they could easily get confused, I should think, between a pet and their next meal! I'm sure they were pals - until he ate my husband's pet, that is. LOL. x, Carrie
