I think it is wonderful to have bird, butterflies, and bees come to the garden - why Saturday morning, around dawn, I saw an oppossum waddle through the back yard - but I really don't want any squirrels - they dig up plants, the lawn, etc. If anyone has a sure fire way of (1) protecting my gardens while (2) getting rid of squirrels - I (and lots of other DG members) would love to know.

I love the squirrels! LOL, if I had to choose between attracting the squirrels and attracting the birds, I choose the squirrels! I love to watch them play and run. In my old house's yard I had a squirrel feeded that was my favorite thing to watch. I also provided a tree stump next to the birdbath so all wild life (including my cat!) could drink from the birdbath.

I use to like squirrels until they started destroying so much of my property. They have completely messed up the patio furniture (all the seat cushions, all six of them - tore into them for nesting material), gotten into my attic, eaten the installiion and wiring under the hood of my van costing me over $500 over two trips to the dealer. First about a year ago they ate the tubing for the window washers and about a month ago the wiring to the turn lights and air bag were completely destroyed. I had to have wire placed on the outside of the air vents on each end of the house and long door sweep but on the back door of the garage. I put ground black and red pepper under the hood of my van but would like to know if there is anything else that will help. I have three large pecan trees in the backyard and two really huge oaks in the front. We had a bumper crop of both pecans and acrons this past year.

No wonder YOU are not too fond of the little buggers! If they caused me that kind of destruction I'd be out there trying to get rid of them too. As long as you have those lovely pecan & oaks you bound to be over run with the little bushy tail troublemakers!

Four things are needed to keep squirrels "in check" while also feeding birds.

1. A Twiling corn cob feeder which entertain you and exercises the squirrels

2. A Bungie corn cob hanger that requires the squirels to "work for their dinner."

3 A "box" for "critter food" that has to be opened in order to get to the food.

4. And Last, but certainly not least is a ...Welch Terrier who stalks and chases them!!!
