| Well, difficult to follow the end of the last thread [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com] with Adel's Goldfinch Rush!
Couldn't resist another picture of a male Downy Woodpecker. This feeder is probably only 4 feet from my office chair. Makes for a fun day.

| Thank you all, I really love it and so do the birds and some other wildlife, too.
Here is the story of the Bird bath and a picture.
This is my birdbath/fountain pond. Kinda wraps it all into one. It is an old cement birdbath with a hole that runs thru it. We were helping friends move and they weren't going to take it with them, it was sitting in the yard when they bought the house a good 10 years or more before and they never used it, so I brought it home. I knew just what I wanted and my very handy son made it for me as a Christmas present a few years ago. It's a concrete well approx 3 ft deep and 5 ft wide. He poured it with a pedestal in the center to sit my birdbath on. We put a pump in the bottom of the well and ran flexible pipe thru the well pedestal and the birdbath pedestal. He installed an underground electric line with a switch that is mounted on the side of the patio so I can turn it on and off if I want. The fountain is just enough to break the surface not disturb the birds and then the water runs over the edge and back into the well. I put a piece of driftwood in the bowl for the birds to perch on. | Dellrose, Your pictures are just beautiful. I hope to get better at photographing birds I'd love to capture some really good pictures. I have sunflower, thistle and songbird mix feeders that I keep out all year long. In the winter I put out suet and hummer food in the summer. We are lucky to have an old hedge row with tall and understory trees next to the house and we have a lot of bushes that they can nest in plus the bird houses. We don't get many field birds anymore since the old farm next to us was developed. But we do get a few Blue birds and Indigo Buntings from time to time.
This was taken several months ago at my suet feeder. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Dellrose, I sure could use a front-end loader right now. We have a lot of red stone in our area and a lot of the old homes, bridges and walls are built from it. A very pretty stone I think. Right now the state is replacing an old bridge near by and tearing down the old one. We have been collecting some of the cut red stone from the old bridge to use in the new stone wall we are building.
We get the red bellies here quite a bit and the smaller flickers(?), too.
This isn't a very good shot but these guys come by to but are more likely to stay in the hedgerow than come down to the feeder. From the looks of my old split rail fence I think they are getting everything they need from it. It's riddled with holes and they wake up anyone that maybe sleeping with the window open in the downstairs front bedroom. Click the image for an enlarged view.

We use to have a huge red headed woodpecker years ago that came in to the feeders pretty much every day. Must have been old, sick or injured in some way. We found it dead one day when we came home. | Thanks Dellrose, Besides trying to provide a good habitat we have a good location. There are woods right behind us and a creek nearby. A state park about 3 miles has a hawk program and sometimes they come by and the river is only 5 miles away. About the only thing we have been getting in short supply of is Meadows. Everybody is mowing them. I'm pretty sure the feeders got buzzed by a hawk the other day. I was out weeding in the yard and I heard a loud flapping of wings as I looked up all the birds in the yard rose and flew away in flurry. Of course I'm not very good at IDing them. I should get a tape of bird calls also, when I go out in the morning you should hear the sounds all the different birds make. We have Mockingbirds one of them makes some kind of electric sound like a cell phone ringing, it's so funny. |

| For those of you that enjoy the hummers, I'd suggest hanging some of last years cattails outside a window, for them to gather for lining of nests. It's given me much entertainment. These were stuck in the fence, and blown down, but I've a bunch of them now where I can see from inside. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Just lovely with the apple blossoms. It's funny that you say acting like a pair. I just was outside and boy was a male house finch singing a song and hopping around on a branch for the missus. cute cute. |

Audubon's - yellow throat, broad white wingbars
Myrtle - white throat, narrow white wingbars
Otherwise the same, and they intergrade extensively where their breeding ranges meet (NW Canada)
