I haven't sown mine yet, but hopefully I will have time tonight. I grow a lot of Gesneriad seeds and recently started a few other types of seeds using the same method and most have germinated. That's the same method the Tahitians will get.

I'll soak the seeds for a little while first. My potting mix recipe is 5 parts MiracleGro potting mix, 2 parts perlite, 2 parts vermiculite. I sterilize it in the microwave. Normally I use 3 oz Dixie cups, but for these I'm thinking I'll use 3" pots. I'll fill the pot with potting mix, plop the seed on top and very lightly press it into the mix, sprinkle just a bit more mix over the seed, just enough to cover it, and set the pot into a bowl of very slightly warm water. When it's soaked up all it will, I'll immediately put it into a quart size Ziploc bag. I like to have just a little bit of water in the bottom of the bag, too. Seal it up, set it on my light stand and forget it. LOL With any luck, I'll see little green Tahitians in no time! :-)

Hey RG - help me with this one...regarding the use of vermiculite - I heard horrible things (don't laugh) about cancer and that stuff so I've stayed clear. What makes it different then using just the perlite?
I do believe that I was going to soak mine (or at least some) in a warm water/peroxide mix as well.

Chantell, I've never heard that about vermiculite. Hmmm...might warrant a bit of research. OK So I did some research, and it seems that vermiculite from a particular mine in Libby, Montana contained asbestos, which we all know causes cancer. Much of the asbestos (Edited to say: I meant - Much of the vermiculite) from that mine was made into Zonolite insulation for buildings. That information comes from NIOSH, on this page : [HYPERLINK@www.cdc.gov] It says that mining stopped in Libby in 1990, so I would assume that the vermiculite we're getting today does not contain asbestos. That was what I found just doing a quick search, but I'll continue to research it and let you know if I find something that indicates vermiculite is still dangerous. Of course, it's not wise to breathe the dust from vermiculite, or anything else for that matter. Hope that helps ease your mind. :-)

As for what makes it different from just using perlite, I find that it makes the soil softer and fluffier. It lessens the tendency of the mix to compact and it holds moisture. I just like the feel of the potting mix better with the vermiculite in it. I have been told by friends in Texas that with their high humidity levels they don't need vermiculite. That makes me think it holds more moisture than I realize. It gets dry as a bone around here and I need all the help holding moisture that I can get!

And here is the second picture of a closer shot of the little guy.

I just put potting soil in and sprinkled the seeds carefully. Then I very carefully spinkled vermiculite just enough to barely cover the seed. Then I mist daily.
No difference today. I'm watching real hard for more.

Planted April 21. First sign of sprout April 28.

Are you talking about the Tiare? The Tahitain gardenia. I have just got hundreds of tiny seedlings coming up from one fruit from a Tiare bush. I picked the fruit when it was fairly green still and had it on my window sill for several weeks until it suddenly rippened up and I just put all the seeds on top of of some recycled potting mix and just left it outside...warm enough here in Hawaii. Took a while to come up but nows lots of seedlings that am transfering into recycled coffee cups. I always find in hard to get Tiare cuttings going so am pleased that the seeds work well. However, I am wondering if it is a bit like fruit trees from seed. Will I have to wait for several years before I get any flowers? Aloha

The seeds that I have been growing outside came up in great abundance from just one fruit...thousands. Most of them I left "bonzaied" in the seed tray until I need some more but several I planted up in styrofoam cups. They are all alive and healthy but seem to be very slow growers..so I guess that is their thing...after a month they are still only a couple of inches tall while the "bonzaied" seedlings are still under an inch tall. Maybe the trasferred ones will really get going when I put them in a bigger pot.

I know Cat...I just feel badly that I couldn't move ahead with the heat mats at this point. They probably just really need some good heat...that would be my best guess. In VA we've had an unusually cool spring...not complaining mind you...but it's not great for seed germination, I would think. I'm trying to put mine where they'll get the most warmth...

critter had great ideas w/milk jugs (for winter sowing - but would work as mini greenhouses just the same). Cut them 2/3's the way up almost all the way around (I like the 1/2 gal size). Poke holes in top (for ventilation) and the bottom (for drainage)...couple of holes above and below the cut mark - thread a twist tie through these to keep top and bottom shut. Leave lid off top also for ventilation. Stick in sunny window.

Well, here's a report on my 20 seeds. I've gotten 12 to sprout and I just now moved them from the heat mat and cover. I've moved them over to where they still have the lights because they are tiny and only have the original set of leaves. The other 8 are still on the heat mat. Does anyone know how much moisture the ones out from the heat mat need? I'm really hoping I can get these to grow enough to transplant them into larger containers. Right now they are in the peat pots. Thanks for any info. Betty

I should be getting a heat mat in the mail soon, so I've saved a few seeds and then that's it...

When in doubt I always resort to using a mister bottle on a regular basis..that way I'm not giving a baby "too much" - yet enough so they don't dry out. Sadly, I have no seedlings to report...but I'm thinking with the warmer temps now that maybe...just maybe some babies will be popping up for me in the next few weeks.

*Sigh* I've lost my seeds again... Guess that means it is time to clean off the kitchen counter. LOL If I find them, I'll sow them today. :-)

So, you mean if I lose them on the counter they won't magically grow so I can find them??? ;o)

ahhh that it would be that easy...mercy if that were the case...I'd be SOOO in trouble...seeing that I find packets of seeds I've set aside in the oddest of places. If the tribe (kids) think it looks like a jungle now...can you imagine? LOL:
"AP: Plant hoarder in northern VA found immobile amongst what appeared to be vines of tropical nature. Although authorities would not comment on specifics they stated an unknown number of plants were found on the premises and confiscated...apparently seeds left unattended were the cause of this interior jungle."

Are we still here? I now have nine miracle babies, in my pot outside, inside an onion bag, in the heat and rain. Tiny but alive.
And zero camera, waahhh, sniffle.

here is the last little sprout. They are all so TINY and they seem to grow very slowly. But they are healthy and shiny, so I will let them be for awhile.

I don't think they are ready for bigger pots just yet.

9kittymom- yes mine are tiny like that too! Yours are a bit more developed. It'll take awhile for new pots at this rate!

My plants are up to several inches high now...yes they do have a lovely healthy shine look to them. I had transferred the seedlings to styrofoam cups but after they were about 3 inches high I put them in 6" pots. Now they seem to be growing really fast so they may be slow at first but speed up. Now are several inches high after a month in their new pots. Aloha

where do I go if I have been a horrible, horrible seed mom and not sowed yet?

I guess I should try now, if yo guys were using heat mats, then seems like hot summer, protected by shade, should be good.

three inches!!! must like the climate. vossner, yup, even tho I planted all twenty way long ago, it was recently while outside and getting natural sun warm and rain, that a few more sprouted and caught up.

well, my guilt catapulted me into action so I sowed them yesterday. I used pearlite/vermiculite in equal parts for sowing medium. I also sowed some lilum regale seeds.

Haven't been on here in ages. I sowed mine on May 16 and I have 8 little babies with 3-4 sets of leaves each. Have not put them outside. They are under florescent grow lights and I just took the cover off of them a couple of days ago. Pretty slow growers but they look healthy!

good afternoon gammy. I have some that I got from a coop (neal's lily coop?) and they are FABULOUS. A nice DGer gave me L. Regale seeds as a bonus and I planted them since I was doing the gardenias. I think they are easy to germinate.
